    Hello Everyone Composites - Prepregs, Pre-imregnated, Cloths/Tapes, Roving... Icon_smile ,

    I know of a few composites manufacturers/suppliers.

First of which is the main man of things here in US - Gordon Composites Inc. > http://www.gordoncomposites.com/markets_archery.htm

As I understand these guys are manufacturing limbs for some of our big crossbow manufacturers as well as producing prepreg laminations used in pressing our own composite limbs.

If you know of any other manufacturers/suppliers of composite materials listed in the topics title... big or small... near and far...I propose we make a list of such in this topic.

    Thanks,

    Ivo

Gordon Composites looks like an interesting place. Do you know if they will do one off orders for individuals?

They should, but as we found out they do follow a minimum order policy...I believe Kauboy tried to order 8ft long fiberglass prepregs and they would only sell him the whole sheet which was around 12 laminations if my memory is straight. They do advertise their company as a manufacturer of crossbow/bow limbs as well as any other high stress composite springs.

I also want to add tot he list of suppliers>>> Rudderbows Archery
They sell black fiberglass laminations with these dimensions > 72" long 1 1/2" wide and .050 thick.

    G'day Kiwijim,

Why do you like Gordon's pultruded barstock (used to be called PowerTuff) so much? Are there any problems in working and shaping the stuff? Don Forest at Gordon told me that they use diamond faced milling tools to shape it with; and under very strict environmental controls too!

    Kia ora mate,

The Idea is very interesting, The shaping of such things on a knee that is Very Happy

As I remember one of my Russian friends suggesting giving fresh pressed full-fiberglass limbs a proper taper by wet sanding in order to avoid dust.

I on the other hand suggested using a drum/belt sander with a template strapped to the raw/un-tapered limb prep....do it outside wit ha nice vacuum hooked up to reduce the wear on the sanding belt.

Now the guy spoke from experience as he did press and finish a matching set of all-fiberglass recurve limbs, I on the other hand only have a theory that I may or may not try out in reality...there are "always" other ways of getting things done. Hi Pavise,
Powertuff is an excellent prod material. It is also suprisingly cheap and easy to work. I cut the basic tapers with a carbide tipped bandsaw blade, then I grind the exact tapers on the belt sander. The only potential problem is dust Composites - Prepregs, Pre-imregnated, Cloths/Tapes, Roving... Icon_pale . Have a good extraction system, and wear gloves, a long sleeved shirt and a dust mask, or you can get a nasty rash and an unwanted addition to your lungs.
As far as performance goes, it is very fast Composites - Prepregs, Pre-imregnated, Cloths/Tapes, Roving... Icon_biggrin Composites - Prepregs, Pre-imregnated, Cloths/Tapes, Roving... Icon_biggrin . I have heard some people say it loses draw weight and cast in warm weather, but I have never noticed it. The only drawback with it is that it is a bit soft (compared to steel) and rough treatment can scratch it. Scratches could potentially become splinters.
I have recently made a prod: 34" NTN, with a 12" powerstroke. It draws well over 300#! I have shoot some 1350 grain blunts out of it. They have horrendous striking power! Ivo,

I think PowerTuff was the name given to this pultruded bar before the company name changed to Gordon Composites and the name PowerTuff is perhaps still used by Bingham, although I don't think it is listed under their bow building products either. Perhaps kiwijim can throw more light on this subject?

Meanwhile, see Gordon Composites Inc, 'site for a list of their barstocks which have various qualities depending on the intended application. I think the former PowerTuff is what they list with a UB suffix. Contact Don Forest, Sales Manager, for exact details.

    Hi Guys,
I never had much luck dealing directly with Gordon Composites. The quantites I wanted were simply to small for them to bother with Composites - Prepregs, Pre-imregnated, Cloths/Tapes, Roving... Icon_rolleyes . I bought my powertuff from Binghams Projects www.binghamprojects.com
It can be hard to find powertuff on their website. You need to go to their Product List pdf for a product description. To purchase some, you will need to email them. The last powertuff I bought was a "special order" and they required me to buy 4 lengths, but it was still cheap, and well worth the $.

Apparently powertuff is manufactured for the construction of crossbow prods and compound bow limbs, so I suspect it maybe well suited for our purposes! Incidently, from my calculations, a 2" wide x 0.495" thick x 36" long piece of power tuff should be capable of a draw weight over 500# Composites - Prepregs, Pre-imregnated, Cloths/Tapes, Roving... Icon_twisted. Add the efficiency of the material and combine it with a 12" powerstroke and you have some serious power Composites - Prepregs, Pre-imregnated, Cloths/Tapes, Roving...
