Howdy, I'm Jack Pine, a redneck from the forest area of northern Michigan. Have carried on a lifelong love affair with the crossbow. Tried to make one in high school metal shop [before they started having panic attacks over such things] but did not finish because of lack of time and materials. I didn't buy, shoot, or hunt with one until 1968, when I bought my first Wham-O Powermaster [still have one]. I have several guns I used to love, but now I hunt exclusively with my Middleton or Man Kung crossbows, even during gun season. I have had many crossbows in recent years, and I love to do performance-enhancing mods. I still have some super designs for unconventional crossbows in my head, and if I ever get my hands on a mill/drill/lathe machine, I will eventually make what's in my head come to reality. Great forum, some really interesting people and designs here!

Welcome, Jack.  There's a wealth of info here to help make your dream crossbow become reality.  Looking forward to seeing what you get up to!

What part of "upper" Michigan?  My Dad was born & raised in Charlevoix and I spend many summers up in that area.  Or are you a Yooper?

@Gnome: thank you, this summer between working our hobby farm and orchard and all the other stuff Mrs Pine can dream up for me, I hope to build and post a redneck survival crossbow, made from basic junk lying around.

@Kenh, I was a yooper for a time, living outside a small village named Republic [SE of Ishpeming and Negaunee], on the Michigamme River.
Now I'm a troll [living below the bridge], living in the boons outside a little village named Fife Lake, about 25 miles SE of Traverse City, on a deadend corner of a dirt road and 2 track.

Todd!!!
GREAT work, thank you so much for showing me, but now I have bad case of crossbow envy! What a rush that will be when you make a kill with your own weapon.  Dang, excuse me while I mop up the drool from the keyboard.
I have seen some great work on this site; I love it.

Welcome Jack,

Its great to have another fellow hunter on the boards here.  I too am interested in crossbow hunting and took my home-built out last season.   No big x-bow bucks to pose with like Todd yet but there is NEXT SEASON!

I'm looking forward to your builds and sharing ideas.

Thank you for the warm welcome, Ernest. No venison but did you get a moose? As much as I love my venison, I actually like moose the best of any game meat I ever ate. Never killed one personally, but my Dad did. Indescribably good! Is that shooter in your avatar one of your builds?

Hi Jack

The avatar is my one and only x-bow.  There is a second one in the works based on more modern design that will also be for hunting.

Moose are a good way to fill the freeze with one shot.  I live on Vancouver Island (big chunk of land off West coast) No moose here, but I did hunt moose on the mainland last year (rifle).  My tag was restricted to spike-fork bulls - no luck.  Saw a few cow moose and one killed by wolves (not much left!) but that was it.

We have an early archery season that starts in late August. I will get the second bow ready for that.  The avatar bow was a great learning exercise.  It is basically medieval with a roller nut and short power stroke steel prod.  I want more speed with the second build and have decided on a fibreglass prod and a modern trigger.  I got a chunk of purpose made glass billet from Gordon Composites that I will tiller into some kind of prod.

Hijack.........lol,forgot the space.........Moose is good,in fact I'm having Moose stew tonight.Have you tried Elk?many here say it's the best, but I must admit I prefer Moose.Got a good Moose stew recipe if Mrs. Pine is interested, probably work for venison as well, using common ingredients, nothing exotic. One thing I'm curious about,If you're going to use your crossbow for hunting, why make a target crossbow?,none of the serious hunters on here do.Trudging around in the bush, and the sometimes rapid shots you have to take is a much different affair to target shooting.Whatever crossbow you make, good to see you on here tho',lots of 'been there, done that' people on here to help, and if you have an idea and share it,good for us all!.Been a savage winter up here, staying warm and clearing snow has been the focus, but it's nearly over, and the sap,and interest in crossbow building is rising..........good luck with your build.

I really admire the skill and dedication you guys on this forum have. I belong to some other forums, but most of those guys would be afraid to do what some of you guys do.
That's a great-looking flinger you have there in your avatar.

I started fooling around with a home build yesterday but had an unexpected setback.  Sometimes what's in your head looks great on paper, but just doesn't work out.  Mrs Pine is home today, so I probably won't get another run at it until tomorrow.

Herm, I never met a crossbow I didn't like. I don't plan at this time to make a target crossbow, just admired the that builder's workmanship.
Starting to work on something now, but don't want to reveal any details so I won't look quite as stupid if it doesn't work out!!!
Yah, I would love that recipe, Mrs Pine is still working full time for a little over a year yet, so I do most of the cooking. The bad thing is, when I butcher my deer, I usually cut steaks and grind the rest, so I don't have stew meat now unless I cut up some steak; I love my steak so I'm not sure I could do that, but as Hotspur already pointed out; there's always next year and I would like the recipe.
Thank you,

You're welcome Jack.I like this recipe because it's quick(Prep. time less than half hour)very tasty, and after working all day,I often don't feel like cooking.Like all stews, and most soups,it's at it's best the second day.Along with secret ingredient biscuits, you have a healthy, tasty cold winter meal.

Herm, I cook a lot of stuff in the crockpot; I don't understand why more people don't. The only negative is, I always make a pot full, I can never make a half pot; I don't know why. Had to buy a small crockpot for just me and Mrs Pine, but I even fill that little thing.
