Crossbow Ballistics with Recoil Empty Crossbow Ballistics with Recoil

Post by Samuel Wilhelm Fri May 16, 2014 12:51 pm

hey, i've just made this 44 pound, traditional skane Crossbow, (with a Oak prod made out of a baseboard) and when shooting it in different positions such as loose hipfiering and the butt of the stock to the shoulder, rifle position thing, and i noticed a huge difference between those two especially, as when i loosely hold it hipfiering, it shoots fast and far, while holding it tightly to my shoulder the bolt starts dropping significantly, (yes, i could feel the recoil fairly well) all thou i held em both at 0 degree horizontaly... can anyone explain how and why this happens?

Chances are you just SEE more drop when shoulder fired. There is no reason I can imagine that it would have more or less arrow drop depending on firing position.

I agree with actionbow.  There simply cannot be any change in ballistics due to firing position.  Trajectory is a factor of bolt mass, prod draw weight and friction that's all.  You see the trajectory of the bolt differently from different positions, that's all.

If anything being against your shoulder would be a flatter trajectory but I doubt it would be a detectable difference.

Crossbow Ballistics with Recoil Empty Re: Crossbow Ballistics with Recoil

i suppose, i just find it so weird as when fiering it with the butt directly to the shoulder it seems to shoot so much down and while i shoot it with the stock over my shoulder while pulling the trigger upwards with my thumb it shoots perfectly straight and both of the times i have my check to the stock too, and my only conclusion would due the Recoil. nvm. ooh and another thing, about length of bolts, should they be as long as the groove of the crossbow, so it will be from the release to the front-end of the crossbow or smaller ones? i made 2 bolts one of wish was the full size of the groove and one that was smalles, maybe about half the size, they both had the same type of shaft and arrow head, i thought the longer one would go further as bows shoot longer than crossbows but it didn't, the shorter one went a few feet further and more accuratly, however i did not have any fletchings on either one of them, and wanted to wait to put them on wishever went the best, but then also, does fletching make bolts actually go further? and not only more accurate? (excuse my bad spelling and silly questions) thanks

A heavier arrow will drop faster. Fletching helps stability. The length of arrow depends on its overall mass weighting and the strength of the bow. For your bow try the thinnest, lightest arrows you can get. Maybe 5/16" X 16" birch dowel with steel tips.
