Crossbow in the Royal Armouries, Leeds

Post by Nick D on Wed Aug 20, 2014 10:35 am

These are some photos I took of a 15th c. German crossbow in the Royal Armouries in Leeds (XI.434).

Thanks!  I especially like the shaping on the trigger and stirrup, something I'd like to do a repro of some time.

The nut seems very porous in the center, but also looks like it got use.  I don't know if there are pins in the fingers.

I love those old composite bows, they look so huge. That sear contact surface looks tiny! I always allow for more for safety, I suppose they had pretty strict tolerances and working knowledge. The nut does look pretty porous, makes me feel twitchy looking at it.
