    Hello,

I just found an interesting mechanism with two bows in a German manuscript dated to 1411. What are your thoughts about it? An arcuballista or cocking device?

This device looks suspiciously like a spanning-bench (Ziebank) for fitting bowstrings on powerful crossbows, rather than an actual shooting machine.  Then again I could be wrong.  Geezer

There is another picture depicting a spanning bench I think. It has compound pulley design with hooks. However, first image has two bows. Maybe it is designed to string two bows at once.

    Hero,

What book is this?.. and can we see more images from it?

The second image looks like a draw bench, but with a rope, pulleys, and a cranks, rather than the usual wooden screw.

The first image shows one bow above the mechanism, and the other somehow within it.  I wonder if this is some sort of spring-assisted draw bench which uses a bow to supplement the efforts of the guys on the cranks. (I admit, I don't have a good idea how that would work)

Perhaps the text would shed some light on what's happening in these pics.

Of coruse, entire book is reachable from below link. There are some other interesting images too.  It would be great if someone provide more information about those.

There is also a screw mechanism but apparently it is an arcuballista.

Great source!  Some really interesting illustrations, covering a lot of ground.

These two were interesting, testing crossbows against padded, mail, and plate armour (opposed to the other way around, proofing the armour against crossbows, presumably, since the work is mainly concerned with weaponry and siege):

    Wow!  That's quite a book.

It's got some of the usual things that these military treatises have and some thing that I have never seen.

Most of it is pretty hard to interpret, but occasionally I get a sense that I know what it's trying to tell us.  For example, here they are telling us to get a shoemaker to make up leather balls full or shrapnel......

Interesting mechanism with two bows Zbz-Ms-Rh-hist0033b_087r......and then shoot them from a great gun.

Just a little notice that this machines could some new (not necessarily working) designs to attract interest of powerful war lords. Thus, we need to careful about if those ever used.

Master Mac that leather shrapnel missles was also depicted in famous Codex Atlanticus by Leonardo da Vinci dated between 1478-1519.
