Chinese crossbow trigger - Improved Empty Chinese crossbow trigger - Improved

    Post by jaeger22 Sun Nov 02, 2014 1:00 pm

Hi Guys, I thought I would show my latest project. As I posted here before,(Universal Standard Crossbow Nut) I recently built three different trigger types and tested them all back to back. I was looking forward to the Chinese type because it's elegant design intrigued me. But I was disappointed with it as compared to the other two types. ( Classic roller nut and my own modern type with a hammer). The main draw back to the Chinese was the inability to cut a deep groove in the front to accommodate a downward pointing fletch.(Doing so would just expose or hit the front fork.) That meant that I had to use 2, 180 degree fletchs or use 3, with two at 180 and one at 90. All my arrows except one are the standard 3 at 120 type and that is what I want to use. Also the sample I was testing made a load CLACK sound when fired. But I expect that was an issue unique to that sample as I haven't seen that on two other examples that I built. At least not so much.
I want to do a semi modern build with this trigger type but the above would be aggravating.  scratch
So I am experimenting with an improved version. I basically, lowered the front fork pin, and adjusted the geometry of the other parts to accommodate.  I went with the bolted together claw assembly just because it is easier to machine and seems to work fine. You can see the dropped fork pin in this photo:

And here is the claw assembled:

You can see the front groove for the down fletch in this picture:

It will now accommodate any of my arrows.

Here is a shot of all the parts:

It seems to work well just testing it in my hand but I have yet to test it in a Xbow. I don't have anything I want to mess up by taking apart now, and the new bow I ordered to do a build with this trigger is back ordered. Sad So I am on hold until it arrives. I have a bunch of work travel coming up so it will likely get there the day after I leave. Mad
I leave next weekend for two weeks on the road. (on my motorcycle if the weather holds in Tulsa and Albuquerque)
But I will post a follow up once I get it shooting.

Well I am still waiting on the back ordered bow but I thought I would post progress on the rest. I took a little more time on this test bed bow since I am in hold mode. . .
Here is what it looks like so far:

This is going to be a weird mix of old and new. Chinese trigger (improved) and a modern style thumb hole stock.
I started with a template and a 1X8 poplar board:

Then I band sawed out and glued the two parts together and then basically rasped away everything that did not look like a stock. Laughing

In this picture you can see how the arrow fletch fits into the notch. Also the arrow holder made from PVC.

I like the improvements!  I still think this is a great simple lock.  I'm plugging away slowly at things.  Got the lock partially inlet into the stock.  The multi-lam prod is 95% done.  Then WHACK!  It's the holiday and life gets in the way of things, even though I don't officially work anymore.

Actually, I'm getting weirded out about stringing up that monster multi-lam prod.  Sorta scary.  Guess I'll just have to follow the pictures in the Chinese how-to manual and see what happens...
