Hi, all. I'm going to be making a crossbow for my larp but unfortunately they have no rules specific to crossbows. They are allowed, but the restrictions given for archery aren't helpful when it comes to designing a crossbow - rather, they are more helpful for a standard bow.

The rules state: "Bows need to be simple recurve bows with no more than 25 pounds at full draw, and with a Draw length of no more than 26”."

Now, looking at that, I'm thinking that I should be fine with a 50# prod with an 8" powerstroke but as this is my first time making a crossbow, I wanted to get some advice from people with more experience as to whether or not I'm on the right track with this.

Making larp crossbows offers extra challenges.  I make a lot of crossbows for SCA, which has similar rules.  They allow 30 lb handbows with a max arrow length of 28 inches, which effectively limits them to @ 22 inches of power-stroke (given a 6 inch brace-height) 30 X 22 = 660 inch- pounds.  For crossbows, SCA generally allows 600 inch-pounds as an approximate equivalent.  If your LARP allows 25 lb. for a similar length arrow (28 in.) you're looking at 25 X 22 = @ 550 inch-pounds. Some LARPS specify archers must use only half-draw for close range... which isn't practical for crossbows... you really can't under- draw. So you might run into problems there... perhaps you could specify a minimum safe shooting range instead.  But that's for you to work out. I already did my time, years ago, arguing with SCA marshallate, to come up with workable power definitions.  Good luck stormin' the castle.  Geezer.
