    Alternative Crossbow Power Sources Empty Alternative Crossbow Power Sources

    Post by benjaminh123 Mon Feb 23, 2015 1:38 pm

    Hello Everyone,
    I have been thinking of some ideas of alternative/mechanical power sources for crossbows; can you give your comments and suggestions on these ideas, as well as if you think any are feasible?

    1. Torsion Springs: Two hinged/pivoting arms in the stock, powered by torsion springs;

    2. Coil Extension Springs: Two hinged/pivoting arms in the stock, each having a hook past the pivot point (closer to the tip of the stock, opposite end as the butt); the extension spring would be hooked on these hooks bringing the arms together;

    3. Coil Compression Springs: same as above except the spring is on the other side of the pivot (closer to the butt of the stock)

    I hope you understand what I am trying to get at.

    Any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Well I'll tell you that this seems to be  an UN excepted method to propel an arrow because, it is not considered to be bow power. Will it work? certainly will. I have one using divers rubber.And about 130#pull. There have been lots of different ways of do this but, like I said. The crossbow community says no.Myself I don't care cause I'm not a pureist when it comes to this hobby.I love using my mind "what's left of it" and my tools and my hands.Also ,jawing with people like yourself and all the ones in this forum. As for satisfying your own desires, have at it.If you search the forum here you find  quite a few different ones that use different ways to shoot an arrow.

    Here is another idea:

    https://i.servimg.com/u/f38/19/15/34/76/untitl11.png

    The spring would be a spring like this one: http://www.mcmaster.com/#9654k337/=w1jinl

    Please forgive the crude drawing; I actually think this one would be the best; nice and compact
    Please give suggestions

    I have my rubber rigged liked that.One thing I'll say about springs is ,"WOW" when you pull the trigger. Noisy and vibrate like crazy.They work .They say great minds work together. I have that exact same pair laying on my bench. Want them?

    Could you send me a pic of your rubber version?
    Another Question; is there any advantage to having a solid "T" at the front of the crossbow with pulleys?
    About your springs: what length are they? I have been having trouble finding springs that extend enough. I would want about 8-10" of extension=8-10" of draw on the bow. Does the "recoil" affect aim? Is a rubber powered "bow" better in that respect? Can you develop the same amount of power?

    Are your springs extension or compression? How much would you want for them?

    They are exactly like your picture. I would call them" pull type". They are brand new except for my testing.I would say the eye on the end is about 3/4" in dia.They measure 7.5 center to centerof the eyes. They are made of .130 thuo. wire. Quite hefty . You can have them if you pay the postage.They have a mail function here ,I've never used it but I you want to talk further ,let's tryit  instead of plugging up the forum. Also I don't have any way to send pictures . I don't know how.

    Wow. I had something similar in mind too.  But mine was to make the limbs out of steel and have the spring at the front of the bow.  They wouldn't be under pressure until you actually cocked it.
    Unfortunately for me I've got like 3 ideas and I haven't started any of them.  I need to move my lazy bum.

    Edit: The cool thing about this design is you can actually get a lil creative.  I was debating making the "prod" into wings. Kinda like a bat.  Only thing is I'm positive this design will be front heavy, like a compound crossbow.

    Just remember, it's important to keep your moving parts as lightweight as possible.  Heavy stuff wastes power moving itself.  As for bat-wing prods or whatever, it sounds really cool, but remember to consider air-resistance for moving parts, like prods.  So you might make (really lightweight) bat-shaped wings but make sure they move flat thru the air, and don't push a lot of air ahead of them.  Beyond that, indulge yourselves, make weird stuff.  I wanna see it all!  Geezer.

    Alternative Crossbow Power Sources Empty Advantages to swinging arms or fixed bow?

    Post by benjaminh123 Wed Feb 25, 2015 4:37 pm

    I see that on some spring powered crossbows people have put a fixed bow on the front; no levers, now bending, just a solid “bow” with pulleys at eighter end. Is there any advantage to having the pulleys farther apart rather than clos together?

    What about levers/swining arms? Can you point out the advantages?

    Here are some examples of what I attempted to explain above:

    Solid "bow" (unflexing, not pivoting, immovable):
