Hey folks. Im new here and wonderful stuff you guys got going on here. Anyways just wanted to ask about suitable/safe draw length for a leaf spring crossbow prod that i had just made. Dimensions are (length:34 inches, centre width:1.9 inches   tapering to   end width:0.5 inches,  thickness of spring 7mm). So far I have drawn the bow up to 13 inches.

Do you have any idea what the pulling poundage might be? The length that you pulled here is probably average I would think. The experts will be around soon , they'll tell you.

c sitas  dont have any idea on draw weight and I suppose prod dimensions are the only figures I can give for draw weight approximation.

You know, one has to be careful starting out.For instance, when you pull the prod back to what ever you have now, look close and make sure your not going to pull the string off the string nocks. In a hurried try with one of mine the first time,I done just that. Also , if your heavier than your prod you can measure it on a bath room scale.Just use a 2x4 like a long arrow. Push the 2x4 down on the scale with the other end on the bow string. Push on the bow.I  make a notch in the board to capture the string so as not to slip. There are picture some where on the site of guys making all sorts of gadgets to do that. Also ,did use use a bastard to string the bow?

As C.sitas mentioned, you want to be very careful about strings slipping off nocks.  The photo showing you drawing the prod should give you a good indication that you don't want to be drawing back much further than that.  You would not catch me doing something like that in bare feet!  Especially with an unproved prod.  I value my skin far too much for that smack!

Thanks for the heads up. Used the clamp-to-table method to string the prod. I suppose string slippage is the reason some forged prods had slightly recurved tips. Ill stick to 13".
