So I was thinking about making a Barnett Commando style stock. As you can see my original intention was a 10 inch power stroke but it turns out it would be 9 inch unless I make the handle longer.  I'm thinking the first one would be made out of wood then if I like it I may try to make another from plastic.  I wanted it to be light and also be able to use a cheap 120 or 150 lb prod like from the man kung crossbows.  Still need to design a trigger system for it too.  It's still in the engineering phase at the moment.

The Barnett Commando stocks worked fairly well, with the following caveats.  First, they tend to get a bit loose in the joint, second, you have to make sure the hooks that grab the string are very wide and smooth, otherwise they'll wear out string-serving and then the string very quickly.  Third, you want to design the bow so that the hooks drop below the level of the table (string-groove) before shooting.  Otherwise, your string will eventually hit the hooks and pow, it will be gone.
The whole thing might work better, if you attached the hooks to cables running over pulleys.  That would give you a smoother draw.  What's more, its likely you can use springs or surgical rubber hose to draw the hooks downward at the end of the cocking-stroke prior to shooting.  Have fun storming the castle.  Geezer.

I was actually debating putting some kind of rubber around the hooks.  That way they would also act as dampeners.

The original Barnett Commando covered the hooks with some thick, clear plastic that wore out distressingly fast.  As far as using the hooks for shock-absorbers at end of the stroke.... you really don't want to do that. The fact is, as the bolt leaves your bow, the string recoils a good inch ahead of the normal stopping point and then rebounds to the resting point.  It still has a fair amount of energy there... how much depends on your bolt weight and lots of other stuff.  But in short, you DON"T want your string to strike anything at the end of the run. Try and design the spanning hooks so they follow some sort of guide downward, so they're clear of the track when the bow is ready to shoot.  This will make you much happier.  Geezer.
