I am traveling to Italy this fall and will have some time to go to a museum or two. I will be staying in Rome, Venice, and Florence.

I want to locate a munitions grade (one that would have been used by a common soldier) Windlass Crossbow from pre 1600. I am hoping to locate a museum that has a selection of of windlass crossbows and bolts so that I can arrange to have a private viewing. There are a lot of museums in the region so I was hoping someone might have the name of one in particular that has some so I can work with them to attempt to set up the private viewing.

Try the Doges Palace in Venice. it is just off of saint Marks Square, and line ups are shorter. You can make an appointment and skip the lines at many museums in Europe.  I have been there twice, and the arsenal there is incredible. Suggest you see if you can find a catalog of the museum or contact it directly. There are a couple of ballestaria festivals in northern Italy Videos are all over You Tube. Can't remember which cities off hand. Were some links posted here about a year ago. Anyone remember how to find them?
Consider a day trip to museums in Austria, and Switzerland. An overnight train might get you into Munich or Nurnberg.
