Anyone able to advise on achieving an invisible joint between the bone pieces that make up the spine inlay on an early gothic style crossbow??
    Thanks in advance,

The expert on getting the bone joints to fit perfectly would be my very-picky journeywoman, Mary Ellen Burdwood, known here as 'Lightly' when she bothers to check in.  She's much better at getting tight fit than I.  However, I do have some observations.  First, real bone/ivory has a grain.  To get a reasonably invisible joint, the grain needs to line up.  Second, in most cases, medieval bows I have examined avoided making square joints right across the stock.  They're usually angled joints, either simple scarf-joints, or chevron joints, where one piece of bone comes to a point and the next is forked to take the point.  It's tricky getting the bits to fit right, but if done carefully, it will result in a very satisfactory and practically invisible joint that pleases everybody. Geezer. :-)

I'm afraid I am pretty rubbish at getting perfect glue-lines but a chevron might at least be visually pleasing, thanks Geezer, I think I'll give it a go  Very Happy

Thanks Geezer, this is what I ended up with

invisible joints in bone spine-inlay 20180919_192302

I was thinking of using cascamite to fix them in place as the white finish on the glue should be near invisible and it is gap-filling. You can see where I really struggled to carve the edges of the cavity tight enough. I may well end up running a black edging strip in paint to 'frame' the veneers, very period  Wink Any suggestions?

I think it looks great, and the black edging would be a nice touch.  geezer.
