What are people's crossbows weighing in at? My latest bow is at about 7.5 lbs which seems heavy compared to my last bow @ near 6 lbs. This bow has things the last one didn't have though, a scope, safety, stock, longer powerstroke and higher draw weight. With the quiver and 7 arrows I bet it's almost going to hit the 9lb mark. Shocked

Seems a little high, no? I could always drill out the stock and put cover plates on it getting it down a half lb or so. It feels right though. Balance is good etc.

    Thoughts?

The one I made with a steel prod is about that weight although another with a laminated prod is considerably lighter. The balance is quite different as well. Can not say which I like better.

I guess my heavy crossbow weights about 7+ pounds but it has a steel prod and steel bow irons. My crossbow is lighter and has a composite prod.

I second what Todd has said about weight distribution. My heavy crossbow with the bow irons and steel prods is much more forward heavy while the lighter crossbow is more center balanced. That really makes more of difference than the weight.

If you like how the bow feels then I think the weight is fine. That's really more important.

Concerning stock and prod weights, Ralph Payne Gallwey, quoting an ancient Spanish crossbow manual, says the stock should weigh at least as much as the prod, otherwise recoil will be excessive. As I recall the correct quote is: the stock will recoil against the face, causing wounding and offense.
As for unit weight, most of my light crossbows weigh in at about 6 pounds, whereas the heavier steel ones are closer to 7.5. The heaviest bow I have made was a fat German sporting bow with a @ 350 lb. Digitarc prod. It probaly weight closer to 9 lb, bound-in, but without a stirrup. It was very head-heavy, but the few steel-prod renaissance crossbows I have handled were similarly head-heavy.
When you see ancient bows in museums, look for the grubby area on the lower part of the stock, about halfway between lock and prod. That's the balance point.

Thanks for chiming in guys. I looked around at some of the modern bows, seems like they are all around 6 to 8 lbs so I guess I am in the right range. My prod is featherweight compared to the stock. That sounds weird...but I don't think the recoil will amount to much as it didn't on my last bow. I significantly lighten the tips making them shoot a little faster and much quieter I think compared to some of my earliest bows.

I think I will try to lighten the butt of the stock by drilling out a chamber, lining it with epoxy and make a cover for it of the relatively lightweight burl.
