    Good Day,

    This topic is the bare bones of the developing glossary index.
    Every letter links to a post which contains the words starting with the letter chosen.
    Pretty cool huh? Very Happy

    So far the list is still incomplete and in it's nature will always be, considering that crossbows are developing and with new technologies come new terms.

    I also have yet to insert example images for each glossary term.

    If you see something missing, don't be a stranger, just post the term
    you would like to see added, and I or Basilisk120 will add it to the
    list.

    Spanning Lever (equipment) - Hinged lever to aid cocking; pushes string back using lugs or a ring mounted at front of crossbow; provides mechanical advantage of about 5:1, varying with lever length.

    Trigger Mechanism(component) - The mechanism in a crossbow that serves as means of retaining and releasing the bowstring[/size]

    Trigger hook(component) - Commonly referred to as "Trigger" it is a Lever type piece of metal that must be pulled with the index finger to initiate the release of the string.

    Trigger Guard(component) - Metal (or sometimes hard plastic) mechanical device which partially covers the trigger and reduces the chance the weapon will be accidentally discharged.

    Thanks 8fingers, finally cleared my head and got back to this topic.

    Added most of the terms you mentioned. Still need to compile a good entry for the Padre Island...I'll do my research and then bother Geezer about additional info. And Spanish cranequin...Think this is where I'll start adding pictures to aid in the definition.Smile

    Geezer here: I don't know if it's necessary to the lexicon, but the term 'quarrel' for crossbow-bolts originally referred to bolts with a diamon-section head. Payne-Gallwey also references 'viretons', which were specifically bolts that were fletched to spin, whereas others were built for minimal spin. (I'm not sure you can entirely eliminate spin, but you can get it down reallll- slooow.

    Interesting...it sounds like this one Russian word - веретено (pronounced: v'er'et'enó) meaning - Spindle. Don't know the exact name for the tool, but it's a rod used for collecting spun thread and looks surprisingly close to a crossbow bolt. Smile

    The sear is the catch that locks a release mechanism, strictly speaking. For example, on a medieval roller-nut type mechanism, it's the notch on the bottom of the nut that the business end of the release lever or "tickler" locks into, usually reinforced with steel.

    I think illustrations are a great idea. I think a lot of members would be happy to contribute, myself included.

    Riser is NOT a term used in crossbow building, since almost no prods have a 'thickened to fill the hand' center section.
