    Hello Everyone,

I decided to do a little experiment with the topics side bar(the one scrolling on the left side of the forum) and made it static.

Try it out and tell me what you think and why.

    Thanks,

    Ivo

    Ivo,

    Static is definitely better!

Maybe I'm just too old for all this constantly moving, attention deficit stuff. It kind of makes me nuts.

Now can we make those frantic emoticons stop moving?

    All,

It turns out that you have to press the "submit vote" button or it won't count. (I had to go back and do that)

I agree with Mac. It's much better static. As for emoticons, they're cute for the first minute or so, then the fenetic movement starts to grate on my nerves. Geezer

Thank you for the votes and helpful suggestions guys.

I see that I'm not alone on making the sidebar static. It came preset as scrolling and also got on my nerves constantly. I get very limited internet access nowadays and chasing those topics is also killing the valuable time that I don't have.

Resent - Topics sidebar and Other annoying features 186986SO IT IS SET...

    - the bar stays static.
Smile Now we just have to get used to it not moving (I still launch for it hoping not to miss anything Mad Embarassed )

As for the little annoying avatars...

Do you mean the twirly ones next to the forum rank?
    Spoiler:

I kinda see what you mean...try opening and closing that spoiler a few times *creeepy* to say the least. Smile Guess it's just my half-assed attempt at putting an accent on the could be great feature...if only I was born a web developer. Smile Smile Smile

Guess we're ready for a bit of hack and slash in that department, so....

    What are your suggestions guys?

Think I should take those twirly bastards out until a better time(when I have a "good" replacement)?

    Ivo

Sounds good to me. I was pretty disturbed to see that I now have a frantic and incessant imp as part of my identity. I have searched in vain for ways to remove him, but I'm not very geekish.

I don't mind the slow moving emoticons, like the "gently steaming cup of coffee", but the ones that jump around are very distracting.

I'm 100% with Mac here. The slow-moving emoticons are rather charming, but the frenetic ones are worrisome. If everybody else likes them, I can live with 'em, but in fact, my apprentice Lightly dislikes them as well. So how do the others feel, or do they care? Geezer

I kind of liked the scrolling sidebar for some reason. It was unique and intersting or something. But the static sidebar is more usable and a little less annoying now that I think about it. So glad we went to the static side bar.

As for the little animated smileys. There kind of fun but I could see changing them out on the avatar side to something simpler.

Resent - Topics sidebar and Other annoying features Empty Static sidebar & DEATH TO SMILEYS

Post by Jason D Wed Apr 13, 2011 1:13 pm

The static sidebar is much better, I really found chasing the topics irritating. As for smileys, I hate them. They can be useful to clarify if a comment was meant in jest or ironically, but too often they seem to serve the the same purpose as "ya'know, like". An irritating verbal tick brought into written english that disrupts the flow of reading. I just reread that and it sounds a bit harsh, but it really gets under my skin some days.

I figured it would be better static, no one asked about it so I just kept the presets from the beginning and have chased the topics just as you guys did.

Another factor to consider is that putting together this forum alone with no previous experience was quite a task...great load of information had to be turned over to make this thing happen and with it there was no guarantee that there would be no mistakes or poor choices made...which is cool, since I get a chance to get to know you guys better and with that help reflect your wishes on the forum.

Also it seems I'm the youngest member here (thou Admin) amongst you more experienced in the trade craftsmen and I can't help, but feel like a "kid under the office chair" at times. Laughing I feel the pressure as your host guys and silence is the worst kind...I get a red flag that something is wrong and start looking for something to improve - often making a damn mess of things. Resent - Topics sidebar and Other annoying features 728780 (I think this is where this emoticon fits best Resent - Topics sidebar and Other annoying features 576186 )

I'll try not to make this mistake again. Wink

There are a few more issues that I'd like to discuss, but I'll leave it for now and go fix what we just covered.

Thank you all, you guys are the BEST!

Your doing great Ivo. Don't sweat the issues. I come here because its fun and informative. Not going to get worked up if everything isn't "perfect". I know that running a site is a lot of work and for that I say thanks Resent - Topics sidebar and Other annoying features 499925. And hey changing things up is good, gets too stale if it always stays the same. If a change doesn't work, try something else and move on.

I too prefer the static sidebar. I don't know what the imp business is that everyone's talking about, but then again I only check in here about once a week if that even.
