    skane lockbow Empty skane lockbow

    Post by rp84 Wed Sep 28, 2011 5:03 pm

HI all, new to the forum. After working on primitive archery equipment for awhile, I've been researching primitive/medieval crossbows over the past several months. I own "The book of the crossbow", and was able to download "The origins of West African Crossbows" which includeds a sketch of a norwegian whaling bow, through Google books. While there is enough information available on the internet to construct a replica of the Skane lockbow, I was trying to find more detailed information on the orginal artifact. I have tried to find a copy of Alm's "European Crossbows", or at least a scan of the text, but can't seem to find anything. Could anyone direct me to an image of the original bow, is it currently housed in museum?

    Thanks

Geezer here: I found the Skane bow in Josef Alm's "A Survey of European Crossbows." This book was originally published in Swedish @ 1949, but the British Royal Armouries published an English translation @ 1995. IF it's still in print, you'll want to look for a site that sells Royal Armouries monographs. That might help... might not. You'll find some references to the Skane bow online as well.

Thank you for the replies and the welcome. I will continue to check online book sellers, I may get lucky eventually. "The origin of West African crossbows" is an interesting read. It described how norwegian whalers would trap whales in certain areas, blocking off their escape routes with nets, and that they preferred to shoot them with bolts that had been lodged in "gangrenous" flesh, due to the septic condition. I assume this acted as a kind of poisoned bolt, and that the animals must have taken awhile to succumb to the shots. They used prods made of yew, but I dont believe they give any figures on draw weights, although they used a wooden goats foot lever to span it. The author makes a good point about how the African designs may have originated from contact with Europeans.
