Hey thanks for the videos. Those are definatly interesting.

One comment about them. I get that they don't have all the time in the world to discuss all of the subtle nuances of spanning but they have the different spanning mechanisms as a linear progression from one to the next. But still good to see some of them in action.

Yes, the historical crossbow videos are rare Neutral I loved to see a goat's foot working, I had "seen" before in my imagination, but there is nothing like the real stuff...

I promise that as soon as I have my first crossbow, I'll upload some videos. Wink

Thank you, Scot. Those were fun to watch. Some of the things they said made me bristle a bit, but on the whole they were not so bad.

I'd like to face off against the crossbowman in the last video. I think I can shoot a a bit faster than he does, using my belt hook, but it's hard to tell.

Quite so. There's a number of early windless varients in Keyser's Bellifortis (1405) that use fewer pulleys. They would not be as powerful, but they would be much faster to use.

The other thing they don't mention in that video is that the hook and pulley's mechanical advantage comes at the cost of draw length. When you get right down to it, a man's legs are only so long. As a result, hooks and pulleys can only be used on shorter spanning weapons. In my experience, a regular belt hook will let you span about 7 1/2 to 9 inches (190 or 230mm). This is about two hand's breadths. A hook and pulley limits you to about 4 or 5 inches (100 or 130mm). This is a little better than one hand's breadth.

In my opinion the last video is just too biased to be taken seriously. It's also the favorite video of vertical archers, posted in every topic where crossbowmen and archers go into an everlasting head to head collision of - Bow vs. Crossbow. An equivalent argument of "Who is Sexier? - Blonds vs. Brunets". Laughing

This video however isn't bad at all...in my opinion it's not as biased as the earlier.
