I hate to be the one to tell you this, but it's not that easy.

Crossbows are like cars, they come in many different sizes, shapes, and configurations...so you'll have to be quite a bit more specific in order to get any good replies.

As it's said: Questions are good, but good questions yield good answers. Smile

    1. Read up on the forum a little and look through peoples build topics.
    2. Read the Crossbow Building Wiki and other resources (in the New Member&Useful Links panel on the right)
    3. Go through the Crossbow Building Resources forum.
    4. Check out the Crossbow books and video topics.
    5. All in all, just check out the site and look through all the links...it only *looks* big...we're just getting started. Wink

Now...Just so it doesn't look like I'm trying to get away from answering your question:

All components of the crossbow are interdependent. Different bows will have different draw lengths, so the location of the trigger mechanism will differ with different bows. Stock anatomy also differs depending on style (period) of the weapon chosen, and of course the anatomy of the shooter(which differs from person to person). So read the forum (make sure to use the Search function) , ask some questions of your own, explore some of the designs you like by mocking them up in scrap materials...and then...before you know it...you'll be set to build a good crossbow. Good Luck!

Ivo is dead on. Start with the bow. Buy one, build one, metal, wood, fiberglass, bone, sinew, horn...geez, too many options. Figure it's best draw length for your purposes, design the meat of the bow around that. Figure out your crossbow's trigger catch to bow apex from there and decide how you want to hold it.

Design it from the ground up and think carefully about every step and you will be greatly rewarded. Or you could just use an Alchemy prod and a pattern for a mideval bow and be perfectly happy. Its all up to you.

I sugest starting with drawings and read up on Good luck.
