Well hey guys, I thought I'd say hello and introduce myself to everyone.

My name is Silas Montgommeri (persona), I'm a LARPer in north Texas who has been trying to get a crossbow that is safe for my game (The High Fantasy Society...its an offshoot of Amtgard.)

So after months of researching I've kind of become addicted to the idea of making crossbows, so I'm very excited to join and learn. The concept and designs make enough sense to me; I only seem to stumble on trigger designs as I'm no engineer, I'm an I.T. guy.

And with that I'm off to delve into the archives!

I look forward to getting to know everyone and learn from y'all. (I had to do it! Very Happy)

Silas, you couldn't have joined a better place to learn and teach. The folks here are great - respectful, helpful, and the collective knowledge represented here is mind blowing. Rolling your own (crossbows) is always the most satisfying way to get the perfect weapon.

As for triggers, a medieval tickler couldn't be easier. I'm a writer and former oboist and infantryman, so if I can do it, you can too. Smile

I've already found a great deal of information. Especially on triggers...so Simple! Another case of over complicating things in my head. Embarassed

I'm really happy to have stumbled onto this place, I was about to give up hope!

    Welcome to the forum!

So, LARP, ey? I've been getting quite a few messages from people asking if I or someone I know builds LARP crossbows, but then people just disappeared in the middle of the conversation...primarily on the part when I asked what specs they are looking for(draw weight, draw length, shape, size, etc...).

Think it's about time we gave you guys a dedicated sub-forum discussing LARP specific crossbow designs. It'll be under the Modern Crossbow Workshop. Very Happy

    Enjoy your stay,

    Ivo

Awesome! That's actually what I want to make primarily, It's pretty difficult to find someone who makes crossbows that are a safe weight for a LARP.

The maximum poundage for a bow is 35 foot pounds so I have to make it a good bit less than that, sense you cant half draw a crossbow for those close range shots. Sure its not going to fly as far but in HFS, archers are rarely firing from more than about 50 feet away.

And its even more difficult to find people in LARP (at least in my game and amtgard) who actually understand crossbows in the first place (in my experience). So I need to learn a bunch so I can convince the players that they are just as safe as firing a regular bow at someone. Which really isn't very safe either.

So that's why I'm here, hopefully I'll be starting my first build within a week or two. I'll be sure to post updates and such in that forum.

I've only been here a day and I have already learned a ton and feel confident enough to start a project! Thanks a ton!

You might want to spend some time with 'The traditional Bowyer's Bible(s)'. There are some bow that are of variable draw weight. The ones I remember have either 2 sets of nocks or cable backings. An 'over and under' configuration might allow you to have a full power prod over a half power prod. If it were a notch lock you could have 2 notches and vary power by draw length.
