    Prod Securing Empty Prod Securing

    Post by cbow101 Fri Feb 10, 2012 12:06 pm

[img][/img]Just finished up a prod for a xbow. It's all wood consisting of 4 lams 1 1/4 inches wide X 21 inches long. The poundage is between 70 and 80#, pull yet to be determined, but probably about 6-7. This will be a hand held unit, just slightly shorter than the norm. I'am also building it with the intentions of having a removable prod. The prod will be set back on the tiller about 4 inches with a slot cut into the tiller at 7 degress.

My question is this I need a block of wood on both faces of the prod.......now been only 21 inches how long should the blocks be..? I was thinking around 3 inches. Input please

    cheers,Cool

My formula is prod should be 2.2X draw length, nock to nock. A prod of 21 inches and a draw of 7 inches would give you up to 5.6 inches. But I imagine your prod's nock to nock length is actually about 1" shorter.
My answer would be close to 4 1/2". This has a tiny fudge factor built in, so this should work if my nock to nock estimates are within a 1/4"

Nock to nock it ended up been 19 1/2 inches. I used 3 inch peices for prod pieces.

Now I can use a 14 inch bolt or arrow......where can I buy them and what wieght do i use..?

The pull is about 70# at 6 inch draw.

I know someone who builds bolts in Saskatoon, if you are into SCA target shooting, and he could help you find bolts for other purposes. Send me a private message and I will hook you up.
