    stringing difficulty Empty stringing difficulty

Post by Frode Sat Feb 11, 2012 1:47 pm

The title doesn't really do it justice. I received a prod from Alchem, supposed to be in the 60-90# range. It's not a 60. I have all but hurt myself trying to get this thing strung (see the "Changing brace height" thread). I've concocted a stringing arrangement that doesn't slip, but I cant't quite haul it into place. I'm willing to accept that I just don't have the chops to pull a 90# prod, and the recipient wants a good heavy draw.
Am I going to have to rig up some kind of whippe(sp?) or goats foot lever, and can that be added to this tiller? It's beech planks glued together with Titebond III.
    Thanks for you thoughts,
    Frode

Here are a couple of shots of the trigger area and the mounting.

Hi there, this is how I have been stringing my prods. I use 2 ratchet binders, one on each limb tip and connect them with a common strap over the end of the tiller. I bought mine at Home Depot. Then crank both ratchets at the same time to bend the limbs evenly, slip the string on. Then carefully unwind each one a little at a time until there is no more tension on the straps. The crossbow in the picture has a 205 pound prod from alchem. No hard to do by yourself.

Forgot to mention about cocking these crossbows, I use a rope cocker that is popular with modern crossbows. I bought one that came with a long rope you cut to your needed length. I file a groove at the end of the tiller for the rope to go over.

Using a rope cuts the effort in half and bring the string back straight and accrurately.

    Frode,
IMHO the cocking rope is the way to go. They're not expensive, or you could even make one yourself like Blangas did for his latest. Very easy to use and the biggest plus, you can put it in your pocket with your extra strings and clamps when you go to the field. Nice clamp set up, by the way!

Thanks Todd and Gnome! That stringing setup looks a lot easier than what I was trying. Would the both of you have photos of your rope cocking setups?
    Thanks,

Here is a picture of the rope cocker.

And here it is being used. You can see how the cord goes over the groove at the end of the tiller.

You just put your foot in the stirrup and pull back with both handles.

If you wanted something more period correct, you could try the belt and hook, too. I've messed around with that a bit, but either I'm not doing something right or my pear-shaped midsection isn't ideal for it- the belt kept slipping down instead of the string coming up! It worked much better when I used a contractor's harness, kinda like a beefy set of suspenders you use when wearing a heavy toolbelt.

This is terrific! Thank you! I sought out Blangas' version, too, and I definitely think the rope is the way to go! I like the notion of the belt hook, but I think I'll leave that to the recipient to choose, if he likes. (The raggety old belt I'm wearing these days wouldn't survive the first pull, I think Very Happy.)

One last question, I'll have to ship this bow when it is all finished up. It'll be padded and strapped to the nines, but I would imagine that it would be better to ship it unstrung, yes?

    Thanks,
    Frode

    stringing difficulty Empty Got it!

Post by Frode Tue Feb 14, 2012 6:32 pm

Whew! Got it strung, finally. Had to take off the clip to pull back a little further that the catch point while Missus Frode bravely pulled the second loop over the end. I need to replace the S hooks with pulleys (hardware store only had one the right size) and size the rope. I have cocked it, but I don't have any bolts prepared, so I'll have to wait until practice tomorrow to get it inspected and tested. More to come.
Long and short, the rope cocker works a treat!
    Thanks folks!
