    Hello to all Very Happy

I wish i found this site earlier!
Ive just completed my first build and could have used a bunch of help from this forums members. Il start by showing you my first build. Based mainly on an article from a 1963 edition of a magazine called "Science and Mechanics" i found online here.

It took quite a while to build as it was only an hour here and there project, my next build is going to be a much shorter, better build.

The design has a few flaws, for example the trigger release mech does not allow for the tongue to hold the bolt in place, the trigger itself doesn't allow for an easy trigger pull by any means, but it is a working crossbow thats for sure and is a bunch of fun to shoot with.

Now to some questions for my next build. One of the problems i ran into was making the sides of the trigger housing flush so it would fit cleanly into its hole. This is only because i didn't like the idea of using small axles and hammering the thing shut for ever. Instead i used bolts, now i can counter sink the head flush on one side, but is there a way to make the other side flush without having the tools to tap and thread?

Also i have a few trigger designs drawn up that i need opinions on. Unlike my last build the nut will have two prongs to sit either side of the bolt.

Greetings, I recently had the same problem with a tight release on my first build. If you look in the Crossbow Building Resources section of this forum under the sticky Crossbow triggers it may give you answers that you need. There is a lot of good info on this topic. Hope this helps out.

Try self tapping sheet metal screws. Some have a drill point. Run them into you side plate then thread in machine screws of the same thread, and correct length. I suggest you pre-drill the hole one bit size smaller. These screws can be hard to control so be careful, try it on scrap metal first. I wasn't really pleased with the results when I tried it but have seen others get good results
Next option is some thread former Locktite, a glue type product you can find at auto parts stores.
If you were to smoke the threads of the machine screws then solder them into the side plate you will find solder won't stick to the threads. You should have threads, but but they might not be very clean.
A tap can be improvised from one of your machine screws by filing a long deep groove across the threads, and along the length of the screw so filings have a place to escape.

That is a pretty cool little crossbow.

You can buy individual taps and dies, and they arent too expensive if you go to a place like Harbor Freight. Not hard to master, either. You may want to think about learning how to do this, as it opens up a world to you.

Hmm well looks like a have a few options. I think you've got a good point Dane it would probably be a valuable skill to have.

What type of tools do you guys use to cut out trigger components? I've been looking at getting a few tungsten carbide bits for my dremel like the 9901 or 9902, anyone used those?

I use hand tools for most anything, but also a drill press. Of course, I dont even attempt the multi-axle triggers and such. I leave it to the engineers. One day, though....Smile

Hey engineerit , nice way to break into building with a tidy little pistol bow. I have looked over the drawings many times for this design. It was the first plans that I found after deciding I wanted to go with a pistol type and I really love the whole 50s feel it has going on. The drawings are gems ,even if they are a little tricky to decipher. I went so far as converting all the dimensions to metric so I could get my head around it better scratch

As for cutting out trigger components, I find a little 4 inch grinder with a cutting disc quick and easy to rough parts out. You can fit a flap disc later for coarse timber shaping and metal smoothing and finishing.
