Installing bow irons Empty Installing bow irons

In R.P-Gallwey's book hey shows the mortise for the bow irons set at the same angle as the notch for the prod. In Alchem's plans the mortise for the prod is set straight (no angle) to the notch. Essentially making the Alchem style mortise horizontal with the groove area of the prod.

So, that being said and using the irons bought from Alchem, what is the correct way? Do I angle the mortise or keep it straight?

You want the mortise to match the angle of the prod in its socket. Orrr, you could put in a shim to correct the difference. Having the angle match works easier and is more secure. If you mount the top of the prod about 5/16 inch below the top of the stock, an Alchem prod has enough asymmetry to just about eliminate string-drag. In that case, you can mount the bow-irons and the prod pretty-close to flat anyway. Its all about geometry: getting at tight fit of bow-irons and prod, and getting an easy run of the string over the top of the stock. Theoretically, the string should just kiss the stock throughout the power-stroke. If you look at medieval bows, you'll see a fair number settled for a bit of down-pressure on the string. Geezer.

Thanks for the advice Geezer! At the moment I have planned the prod to mount 1/2" below the top of the tiller...will that work? What will that do?

Half an inch down will work fine, but you might want to give the prod a smidgin of forward pitch at that level. Maybe 2-3 degrees is all. Geezer
