    Hey guys
    Its been awhile since I have posted on the forum.
    Thought I'd venture out on something that would be helpful in making my crossbow parts. So I have built a forge from a old brake drum and dome smoker. Located a 55# piece of railroad track for the anvil and a old vice from a garage sale. I used 4x4 post for the anvil and vise stand. Build was under $100. Not a bad investment to be able to forge my own levers, bow irons and foot stirrups. Maybe a goat foot lever down the road with more experience.

    Nice job ! Looks great ! How about more info. on the construction of the forge, I'm interested .

    second that comment chaz! good looking setup, is that track flat on the top as found, or did you hae to have it machined?

    Thanks for the kind words guys. As far as the forge construction, just go on You Tube and type in brake drum forge. There are plenty of forge ideas there.
    The railroad track anvil was just as I purchased it. It is quite flat on top. The edges are a bit curved though, but not bad. Many that I seen(on EBay) were pretty well rounded on top. Took a few weeks to locate a flat one, and have the right bid.(Did not want to spend to much)
    Again thanks for the thumbs up. Looking forward for my coal to arrive so I can get started on some crossbow parts.

    why wait for coal? your set up will run on charcoal, and take steel past critical on it! plus, it's easier to get a hold of!

    also, i have a few lengthes on old track set in the ground as fence posts on my farm, they're sinificantly rounded, so i was just going to have them machined flat!

    downunderrunner, I have tried charcoal, a matter of fact today. The lump charcoal does get mighty hot, but throws off a lot of sparks. (not really good this time of year in Texas) The lump charcoal seems to burn really fast. Will try out the coal when it arrives for comparison. Here's a pic of my lever forged today(first time to forge anything).

    very nice work!!! i don;t use comercial chacoal, i make my own, from hardwoods using the "retort" method, low sparking, high heat, but only average "life" in the fire, but the same with any charcoal anway!!

    i prefer to forge on charcoal, as it's something i don't need to bring onto site!

    mainly do knives qnd usch atm, n ot qlot of cause for them atm
