Still thinking about sights... Empty Still thinking about sights...

Post by Stonedog Mon Sep 24, 2012 1:39 pm

In my earlier post, I said I was building a "what if" crossbow bases upon the Change in SM Stirling's Emberverse series...

My sticking point is really the sights...

For a 170# prod....I am torn between a rear peep with front pins (kind of like compound bow sights) and cheating with a rear holographic sight (the daisy electronic sight) covered to hide the fact that it is electronic.

Advantages of the pins, is that I can really dial them in distance and windage wise but being at the front end there is the chance of them being hit and knocked off of alignment.

The holographic rear cam be better protected, but I will have to use "Kentucky windage" due to the single dot. I say sight it in at 20 yards and practice other distances ....

In the spirit of a post electric world, I am trying to avoid electronics...I guess I could always install a fiber optic red dot into the rear Holo?

    Thoughts or suggestions?

How about a rifle sight as used on WW2 Bolt action rifles?
Its mechanic but stil allows u to adjust for distance!
Front part u would have to copy from tod's design, tunnel with pin.

What about something like this adjustable rear diopter sight:

How does that work? What do you use for a "front " sight?

On medieval bows, the foresight is usually your arrow-point.
This rear sight is about the prettiest I've ever seen. Lovely work!

I admire it everytime I see these pictures, too.
It was handmade (sawing, filing and some drilling) but I must admit he is a learned toolmaker with a lot of experience.
(The crossbow it is mounted on looks good, too. Here a link to his german website (he is doing this for hobby not for any commercial purpuse) for those who want to see some pictures)

As Geezer mentioned before you usually aim with your arrow point as foresight.
