Hi all, here's a couple pics of my first stab at a crossbow. I've been working with wood forever it seems like, so I figured it was good time to start a bow. I'm using purpleheart, an exotic hardwood, from somewhere in south america, if I'm not mistaken. It has a naturally high silica content so it tends to dull blades quickly. It it however a beast to cut and shape but is extremely dimensionally stable and does not warp much, even when exposed to harsh conditions, at least that's my finding. For the cheek pieces and stock, I'm using mahogany, much easier to work with, and nicely contrasted.
So far I have the trigger chamber routed, and the nut slot drilled, the stock has been shaped and sanded, and the main body is begun to be shaped. I've got a ways to go, but I'm feeling pretty good about it all in all.

That's a pretty beefy looking tiller. What draw weight of prod are you hanging on the front end?

going with a lightweight prod for my first, 50-70 lb. as for it being beefy, you're right, I'm north of 6 foot, so my toys need some heft.

Looks very nice, and will be really slick once it is finished and oiled. Since it is purple heart, it is a heavy thing, too.
