Re: Anyone ever built one of these?
The device in question is a 'schnepper', or stonebow. Given the pattern, I would say it's probably German in origin I have made Italian and Spanish stonebows in the past. Be aware, it is possible for double-string stonebows to reverse their strings and shoot the ball BACKWARDS into your eye. I know this from personal experience. At least in the testing phase, you should wear some sort of face-shield when shooting. Better yet, build a single-string 'bullet bow' of the sort that projects the ball down an enclosed tube, like a gun barrel. A slurbow-type top-plate can achieve the same purpose. This isn't to say you shouldn't build one of these nifty things, just be aware of the possibilities. Geezer

Re: Anyone ever built one of these?
I think a big rear sight would solve the problem with a ball in the eye, but then again shit happens...

Re: Anyone ever built one of these?
A big rear sight? Yup, indeed most of the stonebows I have seen have some sort of big sight. On these all-iron German types, it's just a sort of pie-pan peep sight. On Italian bows, they often had a carved beastie with slots or peep-holes to look through. They look pretty spiffy. Geezer.

Geezer,
What went wrong with the bow that tried to blind you? Have you ever tracked down what the problem was? This sort of behavior can not be typical of these bows, or no one would ever have made the second one.

Re: Anyone ever built one of these?
What went wrong with the Spanish stonebow? A number of contributing factors. First, the bowstring was a bit too long, second, the prod was mounted a bit too close to the top of the stock... Spanish stonebows curve down between the prod and the lock, but not so profoundly as Italian bows do. The string being too long, and the knots holding the leather ball-cup being a bit large, the string touched the top of the stock just behind the prod. The string rotated 180 degrees, just as it came to full stop, so instead of throwing the ball forward, it cast it backward (with somewhat less power, fortunately) directly through the lense of my spectacles and into my right eye. I got an eye full of glass-fragments and ruptured the sphincter-muscle that controls the pupil-size. Now years later, my right eye is very sensitive to light and vision is a bit worse than the left eye (not too great in either) On the positive side, since the pupil won't contract very much (takes on a 'D' shape) I have much better night-vision in my right eye than in the left. However, I don't recommend the alteration. No fun at all. Thanks to my misadventure, I went out of the stone-bow market entirely, but I'll admit they can be made safe, and they ARE rather fun. Geezer

Re: Anyone ever built one of these?
So....it looks like it is of the greatest importance that the string not be able to touch any part of the tiller. That makes good sense.
Do you happen to have a pic of the bow in question.....or did you send its treacherous ass through the band saw before taking any pics? It would be good to be able to see an image of a bow that is known to be dangerously unstable, just to get a feel for what trouble looks like.

Re: Anyone ever built one of these?
I don't have pictures of it, but the pattern was a Spanish stonebow sketch I found in Harmuth's Die Armbrust. It's a lot like the bent Italian stonebows, but the curve in the fore-stock isn't nearly so pronounced... in fact, it's just enough to clear the string... or not as the case may be. Geezer

Geezer,
You were quite fortunate to come out as well as you did ............... I can think of another sphincter-muscle that such an experience could have affected.

Re: Anyone ever built one of these?
Well... i built this thing and it shoots incredibly good, but it got quite a bit longer than expected because i wanted a longer powerstroke and a lighter trigger pull, only need to finish it up and fit a rear sight and stock to it. pictures will follow

Re: Anyone ever built one of these?
Gah! Finally i got pictures, had to get my sister to photograph and uppload them for me.
It is stil a bit rough, but i will polish it when i find time for it.
The stock, decided to go for a bit more rifle look to fit my hands better (crappy blacksmith's fingers)
Here's what happens when you get girls to take pictures...

Very cool. Now put on a blast helmet and make a video of shooting that badboy. What's the draw weight on it?

Re: Anyone ever built one of these?
Was the string on the original spanned with those steel pins? It seems like the extra string mass would cost you some serious fps.

Re: Anyone ever built one of these?
The draw is 200lb+, its extremly fun to sling 16mm lead balls on the neighbours tin roof
I used what was available when i made the string, if i make a new string i wil use wood
I can't promise a video yet.
