Hello everyone, I have been reading & learning so much here. I started this particular journey because I purchased a Crossbow for my husband who is a Deer Hunter. I knew this item wasn't going to be used because it looked very "antique" & Highly decorated. I figured it would hang nicely in his Man-cave.
It's been 3 years & he still hasn't placed it anywhere so I started to do research. I can NOT find anything even closely resembling this, except one persones *Desire* to create one like this, but can't find that article again....
The (arrow)? would shoot straight through a hand carved wooden Dragons head which is located at the very end of the stock, the arrow would come out of it's mouth.
It also has a hand-carved dragons head on both ends of the bow. The Handle is some type os Fish. The trigger is a simple peg w/a wooden trigger release. It seems fully functional.
Can anyone help me ID this or it's maker. I Will be putting up pics as soon as I figure it out... study

Geezer here, re the 'dragon' bow. Without seeing a pic, I can't be sure, but from the description, it sounds Chinese, or possibly Hindi. Asian cultures have a great fondness for highly decorated stuff like that... dragons in particular.
Fact is, I don't know much about Asian crossbows. European ones are more my bailiwick. Geezer.

I know there is an active asiatic archery forum online, but haven't an address. I do think it has been mentioned here on the Arbalist... probably in reference to horn-sinew composite bows. Can anybody out there help? Geezer

Asian Traditional Archery Network -- ATARN is at
    http://www.atarn.org/frameindex.htm

However, I must say, I've been through the entire site searching on a variety of Asian crossbow topics, and have never come across such a crossbow as described. Back in the 1700s? 1800s? In Europe there was a fascination with "things Asian", and whoever made the bow may have been inspired by something from that era.

I have seen "dragon headed" crossbow at www.stormthecastle.com but the photo is only marginally similar to your description. What you have could be one of that maker's other dragon crossbows however.

If you can post a photo or two here, that would help a lot. A simple way is to put the photo on Photobucket or a similar Image Share site, then post that URL here in the body of your message.

Veeerrrryyy interesting. It is what we
would call a "slurbow" because there is a sort of 'barrel'
    - like a gun barrel - that the featherless arrows go through. The dropping pin lock could have originated anywhere in Southeast Asia. Those
dragonheads on the ends of the prod (bow) and the brass rondels along the
limbs, although pretty, certainly don't help the action of the bow
and lead me to believe that the bow was made for the tourist trade.

The general form of the bow, with the
pistol grip, is reminiscent of the Han Dynasty crossbows. The
general form of the bow, with the pistol grip, is reminiscent of the
Han Dynasty crossbows, but the decorations aren't Chinese. They look
more Indonesian/Malaysian or even Phillipine to me.
