What is the best profile for a crossbow rail? Round, or “V”; Is mahogany fine, or do some of you use aluminum?

The answer is a resounding YES!  IMHO there is no "best" there is just what works for you, and what you're most comfortable working with.

Round or V or even square (3 piece tiller with thin center board offset down) tracks all work equally well, although I suppose round, having more contact with the bolt, would have marginally more friction and slow the bolt down a couple fps.

Mahogany, maple, bone, steel, aluminum, brass, even black plastic work good. Again, I suspect aluminum, unless highly polished, will have more friction than the other materials and cost you a fps or two.
