    Hi guys,
Do any of you know what the optimal stretch length is for 5/8 speargun band? JoergS says that rubber can be stretched 5x its relaxed length, but on most of the spearfishing websites recommend 3x.

Nobody knows more about stretching rubber than Joerg. Nobody.

    Just so.

The speargun manufacturers have to consult their lawyers and make recommendations accordingly.  Joerg consults God alone, and they discuss the matter till they come to an agreement.

If you want a good, legally defensible solution then it's best to do as the speargun manufacturers say.  If you want the sort of maximum efficiency that comes near the edges of failure, then do as Joerg says.   I think I would split the difference, leaning toward Joerg's side.

A while back he was showing one of his super power slingshots.  The man is built like Samson. Any way he was shooting twenty mm steel balls. He pulled that thing backwards as far as he could reach. I think he was shooting like 10 yds. or so. Any way he hit the backstop so hard that the steel ball rebounded and hit him on the forhead. He was instantly nocked down and full of blood . He was terrible lucky ,a little one way or another would have taken his eye out and possibbley would have killed him. I have done this  with a 50 cal. lead ball. Same result. He had this on vidieo  at the time.

Nothing happened, really. This video fooled many people:

But it was made with MSPaint... which leaves no scars Smile

Regarding the question, you can stretch latex based rubber bands to about 5,5 times the relaxed length. But then it will not last many shots. If you only stretch it to 4,5 times, then it will hold much longer than your average crossbow string.

Don't feel lonely c sitas, a number of people on this forum were taken in by this- myself included, for a short time at least. I was amused, some weren't, but at the very least it was a great reminder that we should always treat the weapons we build with respect- since most of us are in this endeavor for the fun of it, it's too easy to start thinking of these things as toys. Accidents do happen.

You know Gnome, I had mentioned earlier that I done this same stupid stunt with a 50 cal. lead ball . I was shooting at about 10 yds. It hit a tree square and the stupid ball rebounded so hard it hit me in the chest. Man did that sting . The ball being lead, was flattened out to about the size of a quarter. I just never ever thought a bout something like that. Goes to show, try to use your head, but always be on the lookout for something  "a little extra".

Some years ago,I heard of a case in the U.S.where a man shot his wife in the head with a .22 calibre pistol. She lived,he died. The bullet ricocheted off her skull and hit him in the chest,he staggered into a police station 2 hrs. after the shooting, the police took him to hospital where he died.Poetic justice, but also proof that ricochets are highly dangerous!,especially from objects like balls and bullets
