    Which knot / method is best to secure the twine that holds the nut in the socket. All the examples /photos I find are so neat there is n knot shown.

    A square knot would work . If in doubt just soak some ca into the knot. You won't even see it.

    what is a square knot?

    ca is super glue. Look up the knot on the net . They have real good pics and explain things.
    Also if the knot is kept small and tight ,it could be rolled into the hole for it and not be seen .That's the object of the knot, very small and tight.
