    Phenolic sheets Empty Phenolic sheets

Post by Rudamchu Mon Aug 13, 2012 2:29 pm

Hi all, first post. I'm looking into the possibility of using phenolic as a material for trigger parts, especially the nut. I'm also thinkIng about using It to manufacture other parts such as pulleys and cams. Anyone have any experience on the viability of this?

Geezer here, concerning use of phenolics for crossbow parts. I have seen ivory micarta used for medieval-type crossbow-nuts with good success. You'll need a steel insert for the trigger-sear of course. The stuff is a bit brittle, and doesn't flex much, particularly it doesn't flex in three dimensions. One mild bend usually works out okay, but compound curves are pretty hopeless. As for pulleys, it might work, but I've got no experience there. Perhaps others can chime in?

I saw it used years ago for small guide wheels on an industrial conveyor belt for a packing machine. Can't see why pulleys would be any different, you would obviously need to insert a centre bearing material but other than that I think it would be fine.
