EXPERIMENTAL INDOOR WOOD CROSSBOW BY ROBIN ALLEN
Robin allen - Crossbow Creations by Robin Allen WoodCrossbow-RobinAllen
This crossbow was made from scraps found around the shop. The body is black walnut. There is a plastic insert for a more slippery surface. The wheels are not meant to be a compound prod. They are designed to cut down the friction at the nock. The strings at the wheels are not served and are left bare. The wheels will rotate 1/4 of a turn at full brace.
Trigger system, draw and bolt data are pretty much the same.

Oh man...Robin Allen's work is on The Arbalist Guild! cheers cheers cheers

I remember speaking with Robin a long time ago on Archery Talk...I was so out of it then and nothing was working out in my first crossbow building attempts. How is he these days? Hope he is getting better.

The crossbows are simply amazing...Like I said in another topic - "I am AMAZED there are no responses or questions here" :affraid:

Me personally...I'm like a tea kettle here and don't know where to begin...phrase "everything is adjustable' just gets my head spinning in a variety of possibilities drunken

Please tell us more about these crossbows...How does the experimental one perform? Which parts of it made it "experimental"?

Do you have any bigger pictures? As big as possible please drunken

Big thanks for presenting these works, I'm anxious to see and hear more. study

I was sitting and trying to understand what was so familiar these crossbows ... If I'm not mistaken the first(wood) crossbow is actually this one in the videos here? Only this time we see it finished! cheers

I've also noticed there are new videos that you guys posted on youtube... I haven't watched them yet as it's a little late and I'm off to bed, but they do seem to about the second metal crossbow right?

Robin allen - Crossbow Creations by Robin Allen Empty robin's wheel crossbow

Post by Crossfire Sat Feb 06, 2010 8:59 am

The wood crossbow I posted is an experimental with wheels installed in the ends of the prod.
Sometimes you have to look closely to see the differences in Robin's crossbows. But there are differences. He is always striving to make the better crossbow.

Perhaps I was too hasty in putting this topic in the gallery...After watching the videos on youtube I realized that the bronze looking aluminum crossbow you posted here has a whole tour of it's assembly exclusively done by the creator himself. Very Happy

The videos give a great idea of what you meant by saying everything is adjustable. first place

Excellent presentation, thou you slightly lost me saying -

Sometimes you have to look closely to see the differences in Robin's crossbows. But there are differences.

So this isn't the same wooden crossbow that is shown in the videos? I just thought it was the same one with experimental limb system mounted(set of bigger pictures would certainly help in seeing the differences cyclops ). I've seen similar wheel tips on other match crossbows...are these special in some way?

Also an interesting question...Were the parts Anodized in the shop or does Robin send them out some place else to get it done?

Post by Pavise Sun Feb 07, 2010 3:26 pm

I was talking to Robin on the telephone this morning and I'm pleased to say that he is sounding and feeling much better but not quite yet his old self.

He sends his aluminum parts out to be anodised but just about everything else is done in-house.

Sorry for the confusion. In the video where robin is building the wooden crossbow, he uses a template to cut the body of the crossbow. Although the bodies have a similar start, the finish product will most likely will be different in some respects. By the way, I am Ray the Troll he is referring to in the video.
I am very glad you have this forum for us to show our creations and discuss different ideas and techniques. I truly hope that seeing work such as Robin's or yours will not discourage any builder, whatever their level of experience, from jumping in here and showing their work or asking questions. Ivo, I would like to build one of your triggers for my world crossbow.
I also want to thank you for showing me the photos of those gorgeous quivers. Mine is almost finished and I will post it when done. Keep up the fine work you are doing here.

I forgot to mention that Robin told me just how much he appreciates the uplifting phone calls and good wishes he has received since he has been unwell; especially from you Crossfire.

God willing he will be back to his Den and keyboard real soon.

Kind regards and yes, Cheers to all,

I have known Robin Allen for quite a while now. Without his help, building the Belgian Target Crossbow below would not have been possible. He provided me with the scale latch and double-set trigger system. These items were crafted by him. He has also supplied me with hand crafted goodies that I could never have made and would not have found elsewhere. He has also made it possible to build the World crossbow I posted. Odd thing, I have never met the man face to face.
    Enjoy

Wow, amazing bows! Very dissimilar from what Geezer and I make, but, to each her own (lol!) and for different purposes and uses. They are fascinating.. love to see one in person sometime, and shoot it. Hope Robin is doing better and will be back for more videos. I will be watching,,,,

I recently stumbled upon some more of Robins work...I must say Robin allen - Crossbow Creations by Robin Allen Icon_biggrin

Robin allen - Crossbow Creations by Robin Allen Mvc00010

And I seconf what Lightly said...that Belgian crossbow that you guys built is amazing...and just now I looked closer, the string latch is pretty big in reality. Can we please see a more close up picture of that area?

Also did Robin get to do much work on that super heavy windlass crossbow (1000lb prod was it)?
