    Split limb Empty Split limb

    Post by shiloh Thu Jan 24, 2013 5:44 am

    I`m thinking of doing a compact version of the split limb set-up as on the Exomag cross bow.
    Any thoughts, suggestions, advantages/disadvantages.?? I breifly looked around the forum but found nothing pertaining to this subject.

    With the exception of the limbs(possibly fiberglass) I`d do most with wood with maybe a medieval flair, or pistol gripped sport-er.

    The brackets/yokes that hold the limbs on the Exomag are obviously synth. or alum., do you think if they were designed with a good hard wood incorporated into the stock(as opposed to being bolted on) they`d be strong enough.

    cheers

    the exomag style may work. it looks like it has a take down recurve attached on top of a tiller. making a short riser out of hardwood is fairly easy. not sure how you could connect it in a similar fashion without a sturdy way to bolt it that wouldn't weaken the riser. if it were wedged inside or fit into a notch on the end, you'd have a better and safer mounting.

    are you planning to use composite or steel limbs?

    Google image "proline crossbow" they were made in the 80's I think. They used a laminated wood riser I believe.

    panne;
    good point about the riser, shouldn`t be too difficult with a little thought, I think fiberglass will be the limbs at this point, maybe steel latter on. I`ve got a couple old f/g long bows laying around I may sacrifice to this project Split limb 565451 Smile , or use some of the 3/16" f/g flat stock I used for the Pistola limb, it worked out pretty good.

    Todd;
    Images helped quite a bit, lots to look at and consider. I know it`s all been done before, but there`s just no fun in just going out a buying off the rack. At least this way I`ll learn the ins and outs of xbow risers.

    I was also considering Digitarc`s limbs, the ones with the wheels at the ends, they look like they`d be pretty smooth, maybe get a matched limb set or just cut one in half?? would that work?

    Cheers

    cutting a limb in half to make two probably won't work because most of them are thicker on the mounting end. old snow skis and some water skis make pretty good limbs for take down recurves and crossbows. ski limb crossbow video> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C10j6_TltAA

    you could laminate some of the flat fiberglass material to make it bend the way you want.

    Welcome aboard. Risers...there's quite a few ways you can tackle this thing in. We had a topic that mentioned riser material which kinda turned into materials and *designs*, so you'll probably pick up a few ideas from there.

    Also, when you said *brackets*...I remembered one of our members posting a link to his YT Channel. Very nice build and very well illustrated too, so I definitely recommend everyone to check it out and beat the crap out of the Like button. Smile

    Panne, Ivo;

    Thanks for the links they were great read and watch.
    More to a riser then meets the eye. I now have a better understanding of the role and stresses a riser is subjected to. Proper choice of mat`l will be paramount.
    Ski`s for limbs, never thought of that, though I have thought about taking down a whiskey barrel and using it`s staves. For this project I will as Panne suggested, use the F/G flat stock and some Hickory to laminate the limbs, I think that`ll work fine for a decent weight bow.
    Thank again for the input, lots to think about.

    Cheers

    So thinking a little more on this project, I`d like to incorporate a double trigger catch lock system and keep the tiller more in the medieval style maybe with a tilt down shoulder but , in the shoulder like a rifle.

    The trigger mech I`ve been looking at is like the one described in Sir Payne-Gallwey`s book, ch43 p`s 210-11-12. Is there anyone out there making these, ready to install, kit form?, I understand it`s working principal, but I don`t think I`m up to the task of actually making one.

    The prod and tiller I have no problem tackling, even the risers for the limbs I think I can manage, but the this type of trigger mech not so much.
    Any help or input on this matter would be appreciated.

    I should also ask, are there draw weight limitations to these kinds of trigger mechs?

    Cheers

    Split limb Empty lock system

    Post by triggersmith Mon Sep 02, 2013 9:49 pm

    The only one of these locks and double set triggers I have seen is the set I bought from Robin Allen to put on the Belgian target crossbow I built.  He made the set when he was in England.  I have seen another Belgian, but not that trigger and lock.
