So looking at my crossbow after taking it to the range. I noticed how far the string was traveling up the ramp after the shot.
The red line is were the string sits when it is nocked and the blue line shows the extent of the string travel. I noticed this when I was looking at it after practice and noticed how far up the ramp the string had rubbed. If I had a better camera I could get a picture but it is kind of subtle. Just something to keep in mind if someone is building a crossbow and want to use a dovetail style bolt rest. Just make sure it gets far enough forward.

If it's critical, there is a possibility to assemble "string stoppers", like manufacturers made on a TAC 15.. It shouldn't negatively affect shooting, at least in theory. It also decreases vibrations afterwards.
But how to make authentic middle age style string stoppers - it's another question..

I was thinking about that, I have something similar on my compound bow. I'm not sure it really necessary.
The theory with the string stopper on the compound is to "pop" the arrow off the string so the string doesn't slow the arrow down before coming off. Since the bolt isn't attached to the string with the nock it shouldn't matter.

just looking at the Tac 15 (http://www.pse-archery.com/prod.php?k=55444&u=1135) , interesting. It looks like the Tac-15 arrows (need to use the approved arrow) have a nock hence the string stop. Now if I had $1300 floating around, since I already have an AR15 lower. I can now say I have seen every mod for an AR.

    Edited to add:
Seriously if I could get one for $300 or less, I really would buy one.

I don't really like the new tac crossbows...Personally, I would like something small, light, lever spanned, and of coarse in black(one thing I do like about the TAC) pirat

Back to the string stoppers....how about disguising them as pom poms that were widely used on medieval crossbows? Smile

Maybe just to reinforce bolt rest so it will work as a string stopper - will be a simplest way?
And, yes, I also think that price of TAC 15 is highly overrated..

Ivo, as I thought, pom poms were designed just to make crossbow quiet. How will they help to avoid string travel over a bolt rest?

I pictured it in my head just as you described with tac15 only made more compact by moving them closer to the stock (if not making the stock with built in stoppers from the beginning) and then simply "disguising" with some pom poms. Very Happy

My question is, What causes this string travel...is it "string stretch" due to the inertia of the limbs that stretches and lengthens the string and allows the limbs to travel further thus resulting in the "total travel" marks we see?............or...is it just string vibration due to the inertia of the string itself being halted by the stopping of the limbs? Or perhaps it's BOTH...I'm kinda lost here. tongue Will be interesting to see if my camera has the high enough shutter speed to capture this. Surprised

That sort of string over-travel is quite normal and mostly relative to the mass and length of the given string. There is little if anything that can be done to prevent it and if it did not happen then the string would simply break and we know what the results of that can be! Nothing can be brought to an instantaneous stop and in my opinion there is no worthwhile reward in pursuing this as it relates to a medieval type crossbow. Just make sure that the vibrating string cannot engage and hang up on any part of the barrel, bolt rest or anything else that will prevent it from coming back to its normal place of rest.

Yeah it may not be necessary but I was interested in hearing some of their ideas. Total String Travel Icon_biggrin
I have a string stop on my Compound as they are all the rage these days but yeah not having a nock makes the string stop kind of worthless.

Total String Travel Empty String stops

Post by Geezer Mon Mar 22, 2010 6:58 am

Geezer here: I would say a string stop on a crossbow without nocks is just a waste of effort. It will wear your strings out faster, and may just get knocked out of its mounting. If you look a medieval crossbows with bolt-rests, like the ornate one at the top of this page, you'll note the rest is as far forward as the bowyer could make it? Why? Because otherwise, string-travel will knock it off, along with some of the bone veneer. How do I know? Lordy, let me count the ways... Geezer
