    OK, so I've read and re-read the thread posted on making horn-and-sinew prods started by Basilisk, but has anyone here actually made one?  I wouldn't mind having a go and have found this blog at Bow Explosion http://redhawk55.wordpress.com/category/crossbow/ but am likely to be having fun experimenting with carving antler for at least the next several months.

    Any thoughts/encouraging/discouraging comments???  Laughing

    Holger Richter, author of Die Hornbogen Armbrust, referrs to an Englishman who has successfully made horn/sinew bows.  I don't recall the details, and am not currently inclined to search my library for Die Hornbogen.  As I recall, his description of the work involved parallels that described in Baron de Cosson's article on horn/sinew bows published @ 1893 in the Royal Society of Antiquaries journals.  The process is long and involved, with lots of opportunities to make mistakes that will ruin your project, and better yet, you get to work with hot horn, sinew and fish-glue, which will not make you popular with neighbors or spousal-unit. I read the de Cosson article over years ago and decided to stick with steel prods, made by others.  I suspect when you've done enough research, you may have your own doubts.  Geezer.

    Hi Geezer, I already have plenty of doubts, the process seems a long and complex one, that is, I suppose, why I wondered if anyone here has actually made one....

    Yeah, I hear ya.  Making a horn/sinew prod looks like one of those projects that work better with an instructor who can steer you away from time-consuming errors. One thing that's obvious: it takes a lot of patience, with every stage being done slowly, with lots (but not too much) of drying time.  I just looked at it and said: "no, way, I haven't the patience or the life-span to get this right."
