    Hey folks,
I'm wondering about what to do first in making my crossbow. I have some 1 1/4"x 1/4" fiberglass flat bar. It is Extren brand, unidirectional structural stuff from work. Anyway, I'm thinking about a three leaf stack prod and Skane type (I guess is what it's called, with the peg in the hole...) But I don't know whether to build the prod first then the tiller or what.
When I build the prod how do I determine the brace height, and the draw length? The stuff is in the garage and I can't remember the lengths but I'm thinking the long one will be 28-30 inches...
I guess once I have the draw length the location of the peg is self evident and the rest of the tiller can go from there.
      Anyway, any advice or thoughts?

      Thanks!

Personally I'd build the prod first.  Once you set a brace height and draw length it will b easier to mark up the tiller from the very beginning.

    Thanks Ken,

Is setting the brace height and draw length a judgement call? Kind of "Looks right, is right" For the brace height anyway.
I guess the draw is a far as you can without breaking anything, minus 10%, haha, however you figure that out. I'm fine with the by guess and by gosh method, just wondering if there is a more certain way.

    Thanks

Brace height is usually around 3".

Excellent question..... and one I don't have an answer for lol!

My old recurves have draw lengths twice that of their brace heights, so a 3" brace would have a 6" draw.

Always exceptions to the rule however, prod material, thickness, nock to nock distance etc etc. Old Excaliburs for example, had lowish brace heights and long draws.

On my loose laminate (1/4" lams) prod I am getting 14.5" draw from 28" ntn @ 3" brace.  Going to 4" brace was pushing it.

My thoughts for this would be to make the prod, and affix it to your stock blank, then draw back the bow until you reach what seems to be it's maximum safe draw, then mark that on your stock blank, then work out the trigger and shape of the stock from there.

Also i'd like to say if you're working with a pinlock crossbow, you should consider using a wooden roller nut instead, as in my experience any pinlock without an impractically heavy trigger pull or some sort of fancy insert for the notch is at a light enough draw weight that a wooden roller nut could handle it.
