Whammo Powermaster crossbow--need new bow? Empty Whammo Powermaster crossbow--need new bow?

Post by Mr. Apol Thu Jun 02, 2011 10:24 am

I picked up (for a song) a complete stock for a 1970s vintage Whammo Powermaster crossbow. It's in good shape, and it is complete except for the bow & string. That's just as well, as I read that the Consumer Product Safety people recalled the Powermaster back when because the aluminum bows were prone to snapping, with unpleasant results.

So I have this nice stock in need of a bow. I measured the slot in the stock and it would take one of those Taiwanese fiberglass bows in the 150# range except the length of draw is longer. Using my existing crossbow as a model, it has a draw length of 9.25 inches, while the Powermaster draw length with the same bow would be 10.75. Does this sound unsafe, stretching the Taiwan bow an extra inch and a half? It doesn't feel like a good idea to me.

What alternatives are there? I'm not looking for anything fancy or supremely powerful, just a decent bow to get the old Whammo back into action.

If anyone is curious what the Powermaster looked like, there are often ones on sale on eBay.

    Paul

Wham-o powermasters. My first crossbow was a Powermaster, and the first I built used a Powermaster prod.
The last time I checked, you could buy steel replacement prods for Powermaster from Alchem Corp.
Alternatively, you could cut back your Wham-O Powermaster stock to accept either a 28 inch steel prod from Alchem or Darkwood, or you could fit one of the Chinese fiberglass prods. IF YOU PUT A 28 INCH CHINESE PROD ON YOUR WHAM-O WITHOUT REDUCING THE DRAW-LENGTH IT WILL BREAK! You have been warned. Geezer

I think if you added recurve tips like a Siyah it would only make the problem worse. Having recurve tips increase the stress in the bow part.
Now adding straight non-bending limbs like a Holmeguaard or Molenbat (not sure on either spelling) could reduce the stress in the limb for a give draw length. Now how to do that on a fiberglass limb (I'm assuming your talking about the fiberglass limbs)? Not so sure. Sounds like more work than it might be worth.

Geezer, I still have my old Powermaster from back in the days. I would love to get it shooting again, just for old times sake.I searched for Alchem Corp. , but all I could find were chemical companies. Do you have any specifics on the company? Thanks!

I believe he is Refering to Alchem inc.http://www.alcheminc.com They have a variety of crossbow prods for sale http://www.alcheminc.com/crossbow.html

If you're not sure what to get, ask them and I'm sure they can point you to the correct prod.
