Post by African Archer Thu May 23, 2013 1:10 pm

Hi guys, thought you might like a sneak peek at my latest bow. it is nearly complete, just waiting for the prod and nut to arrive from the shop. the tiller is Afzalia. it it very similar to my last bow, except i have left the deck off and lightened it quiet a bit.
the prod will draw about 250 lb at 8 in. the bolt is 40 grams and made from Merabu.

New Crossbow nearly complete Empty Second crossbow completed

Post by African Archer Sun Jun 02, 2013 12:59 pm

Well here it is, 250lb at 8in, and its a beast. It throws the same bolt at about the same speed as my first crossbow and its draw is much lighter. I put this down to the fast flight string and the fact that when i designed the cut files for laser cutting, i lifted the tips. from center of knock to knock sits about 2mm above the deck, reducing string angel to just about nothing when strung. It cast a bolt right through a 16mm peace of ply at 20m this afternoon. Hope you guys like it. The bolts weigh in at 620 grains.

Thanks guys, its amazing how easy it gets once you have made one , things just fall into place , I'm very chuft about the prod , that slight tip lift makes huge performance difference, really worth it.

Out of curiosity, is it legal to hunt with where you live?

If so, do you plan on using it to hunt?

Stonedog it is legal to hunt with, as long as it meets the norms and standards set out for hunting with archery tackle, in about 3 weeks I'll be hunting with my 400lb bow, this one is going to be tested by a magazine called SA bow hunter, I'm trying to build a following in this country, as our trad bow hunting is big.

Well that's the idea, and I have the editor of the mag very interested a swell , so hopefully we can get SA interested in these traditional crossbows, globally, hunting with them isn't done much as far as I can find out, except for the country that don't allow it, I can't understand why, they are more than capable of getting the job done and its a challenge doing it.

For your next bow you can use kudu or impala horn from this hunt, and Jarrah or Blackwood to make a real medieval-style wood/horn composite prod!

Hotspur thanks I still haven't sent the bow to the mag, iv been putting it off because I want to hunt with it, this weekend and the next, I'll be hunting, it is so sweet to shoot and no spanning rope, if I come right I'll post pics if the big boys of this sight don't mind, and as soon as the article is done I'll put a link up for it. The 400lb is here, look for , first crossbow complete, I like it, but it has nothing on the 250lb bow.

as long as you have a cad file, most company who laser or water jet cut will do it for you the heat treating is the important bit, mine are cooked to about 34 Rockwell seems to do the trick.
