I have been working on this project for a long time, and finally got it assembled to the point of trial shooting. The string needs to be remade (it's too short) and the lever assistant may need to be adjusted to improve its strength....

It's inspired by the orc weapons in the battle at Helm's Deep from Tolkien's book and the movie "The Two Towers"

Wow that is crazy cool. Definatly has an Orc bow feel. Do you know what the draw weight is?

Looking forward to getting the shooting report for that monster/

~Thank you Basilisk for the compliment!

No idea yet about the draw weight. My intention is for a 125-150 lbs draw, but I'm not sure if this bow wil do it. And my scale only reads to 110 lbs.

By the way, the bow is made of unglued laminates- 3 Sassafras layers , one black locust layer on the belly side and backed with canvas and cable as well.

You did get really close, they did use a recurve prod on the originals, but I think your Orc-Tech Prod is more authentic to the Orc ways. Siege Orc Crossbow 524936

After watching the video I also noticed the arrow strike sideways and watched it again more closely. No problem there, you just rested one of the limbs on the bench and that's what caused the problem...But that's what happens when you are in are in super sonic mode. Laughing

Nice build and brutal in all it's glory.

If I may add something to make it a bit better...

    Siege Orc Crossbow DSCN8707

In the above picture I see a bit of a problem...the sharp angle right after the side plates is probably destroying the string right now...you definitely got to file/sand it under a slant so it's even with the side plate and there is no gap for the string to catch on as it travels down the track.

Definitely make that new string, perhaps a thick black bow string (some natural fiber like hemp dyed black) would give this bow the beastly Orc siege look it deserves. Twisted Evil

    Ivo,

Thanks for the compliments!! Also I'm glad you linked a video clip from the movie (The Two Towers) which I drew my original inspiration.

I have redone the area at the top edge of the side plates as you recommended.

I put it to the scale today and draw the bow to about brace height requires more than one hundred pounds , so chances are pretty high that this bow will be over my goal of 150 lbs.

Here are some other specs on this crossbow:

Mass: 23 lbs for the entire crossbow and the cocking lever

Length : from tail to melee weapon spikes on the front- 56.875 inches

    Bow length : 40.625 inches

No, it's okay, I don't mind! I am going to show your pics to a friend and see if he can make us an orc target to shoot at. It's a big change from the usual furry critters that are normal 3-D targets Very Happy

Thanks! I wanted to make some targets that would get attention and make peoplke get out there and shoot with us instead of the ole standard target butts

I made this guy by useing 1/4" rod for a skeleton then used the swimming pool foam noodles for the limbs, then filled out the body with those cheap blue sleeping foam pads.I then dressed him in some old clothes, made the armor out of the better looking foam exercise mats.....and of course bought one of the full head orc mask. The mask wasnt cheap at $40 but well worth it because it has taken hundreds of shots and still looks good.

I have also made some other armor to change him into a black knight.....and we have also dressed him as a viking once.

We have been shooting him for almost 2 years now and i havent had to do many repairs.

I think that is more for a Leonidas's Character........don't remember very well, but it seems from 300 movie....
Orc needs more dirty stuff, like a piece of iron with a hok on it's point, and a skull pending by the grip!!!

That sword does look good and would go well with that the orcbow.

I think it looks better as an orc sword than as a "300" attempt at a Greek sword

Yes-that is it , it's a replica of King Leonids' sword from 300.

Thank you for your replies. I do really like this sword. True , it's not a perfect match (by the movies) but this version of this sword fits my self made "Orc-style" I think. This sword was even cheaper than the one in the link above, my friend gave me a look at the catalog he ordered it from. It was sold as " able to chop nails "-- it's certainly a heavy blade, but the handle and the guards are really cheap. So I want to remake those parts....
