    First topic message reminder :

Ok, so I have gathered a few things and a few ideas. Last night I got some stuff cut out on a laser cutter I have access to (love hackerspaces).

So first official build part has begun...
Had this cut out of corrugated cardboard.

    Yeah not a problem
Official Mechanical powered Crossbow build - Page 2 WhiteRaven_lock

I should add that in point 1 when I said sear and sear angle I was looking at where the sear contacts the roller nut not the entire part.

Maybe this will make point 1 a bit more clear. Looking at the red circle, the sear should start to drop straight down when the trigger is pulled. Then that may mean that the sear would have to push the Roller Nut back before the mechanism would fire. Trigger pull would then increase by (Draw weight X 1/8") or quite a bit. Possibly making the mechanism impossible to use. Or at least that is the concern and something to look at.

Shortening the sear contact will also help with the above problem and giver a quicker trigger pull.

Started on the prototype bow arms. Again, these are not the final pieces, but the shapes for the final pieces.

I'll finish the two matching (mirror opposites though) arms, make a mold, then make replicas in wax. I'll then make the wax replicas hollow (to save weight) but the walls thick enough to with stand the required forces.

Thanks! That's the idea behind using a real bone for it. Wink It IS real bone.

Again, this is the mold pattern I will replicate in wax, then eventually a silicone bronze.

    More image updates.
I designed this for the front end of the crossbow.
Official Mechanical powered Crossbow build - Page 2 Mech_b13

The idea is to make it out of something so I can cast it in aluminum for the final piece.
So I brought some stuff with me to work over the weekend, because it gets Really Slow...
Well Sunday was just about dead, so I got out some craft foam, scissors, super glue, and that drawing and came up with this.
Official Mechanical powered Crossbow build - Page 2 Crossb11

I'll further complete the details with paperclay and wax for the final piece. Then I'll invest it and burn it all out in a kiln. Very Happy

Who cares how long it takes, and more pictures are a good thing. This looks just great. This thing is very gothic and horror-oriented. I just wanted Midnight Meat Train again a few days ago, and the climax to that movie immediately came to mind. If you haven't seen it, go rent it, Clive Barker story set in NY subways.

So I'm just about finished with the overall design of the receiver group on my crossbow. Once I get it all done and converted to CAD files I'll send it to be cut in 1/8" steel.

Your reciever side plates seem to take a dip down to the nut, as the string is released it appears it will have bump up to overcome. Is that right? Just asking . The skeleton clock works look is very interesting. This thing will be quite the show piece.

I have a deal worked out with a friend to get everything water jet cut out of steel. I can get decent discounts on water jet and laser cutting though through a local hackerspace group.

It does dip slightly towards the roller nut. was looking at several different crossbow trigger styles and I thought this may help in getting all the parts to fit within the 2" parameters of my receiver group with out any significant functional loss.

Correct me if I am wrong, this is new to me.

Few more updates on the jaw piece for the tip of the crossbow. A little patience and some Paper-Clay and it seems to be turning out nicely. (Too bad the paper clay dries so slowly... work a little, wait alot, work a little...)

    So updates coming soon.

Try an experiment for your paper-clay work. Do a couple of test pieces and stick them in a micro-wave. Start with just a few seconds time, and see how it speeds up the drying-time. Then work up to longer periods.
I often use microwave to heat/speed up drying-times on small pieces... just avoid putting metals in your microwave, unless you're really fond of sparklies and mild explosions. Geezer

It our dry heat its cured in no time.

It's just in our A/C office that it takes 30-40 minutes.

    But thanks for the tip!
