    HEY GUYS

Is there a rule of thumb concerning the length of a bow string ....................when making your own prod and string should the string be an inch or so shorter than the length of the prod, or just enough to bring tension to the prod ?How long should a crossbow string be? 874442478

    Thanks.

    Chaz,

I don't think that there can be a rule of thumb that applies to all sorts of prods. the string length will depend of the amount of reflex (or deflex), and the intended brace height.

The best I can suggest is this empirical method..... Draw the prod on a tiller board with a bastard string until it "looks right" and then measure the distance between the nocks. Even here, you will have to make allowances for the amount of string taken up in the loops etc.

I always end up making a couple of strings before I get one that is right. The "failures" can be set aside and used as strings for other bows, or as bastards.

    M ac,

Thanks for the response. I'm currently working on a crossbow bracket to accomodate either metal or wood split limb prod and started thinking in terms of the string length, As you said...... I pretty much believed it would be a trial and error thing , but was hoping for a "rule of thumb quick fix."

    Thanks again

Here is my rough guidline for starters:

For every foot of bow length (nock to nock) brace one inch plus an inch.

For example if the prod is 2 1/2 feet long brace it 3 1/2"

    If 1 1/2 foot long brace it 2 1/2"

6 foot english longbow brace 7"

This is only a rough starting point but I don't think you will too far off.

    Todd,

Thanks that sounds like a good starting point.
