Post by Desert Drifter Fri Sep 06, 2013 11:13 am

I'm a retired Coloradan where archery has been a big part of my life.  Over the years I've made my own firearms, forged 100s of knives, made a few bows, lots of strings and I couldn't begin to tell you how many arrows I've made.  I've always had an interest in the crossbow but it wasn't until I've rescued a couple of them from pawn shops, garage sales and restored them to service when my interest expanded into wanting to start making them.  I think I've got the skill sets I'll need for the new hobby.

Other interests included prospecting for gold, blade smithing, retro camping and wilderness cookery.

My first project I'd like to make a simple, mid evil forest made pistol (primitive made probably better words).  I'll start off by forging the prod first, then move on to the irons and trigger parts.

I'm certain I'll be chiming in for help.

    Nice meeting you all.

You want primative but 'special', check out Nerd-Flintsone's Paleo-Legal Compound crossbow.  Sticks and strings,no forging necessary!

That is a cool bow!  The longer you look at the pictures other ideas come to mind.  Like it could also be used as a back pack frame.

Thanks for all of your comments and posts gents, much appreciated.

Wow!  Now that's thinking outside the box - a backpack frame.  I like that idea!    Smile

Where are you in Colorado, Drif?  I lived in Fort Collins for a number of years back in the 70s, then again in 2003-2005.

Kent I live near the greater Denver metro area and I have some undeveloped land in southern Colorado that I spend a good deal of time on just loafing and camping out on.  Great place if your looking for solitude.  My nearest neighbor is 7 miles away, closest paved road is 22, and closest town is 40 miles away.  That is where my screen name originates from.  Deer, elk, bear, coyotes, quail, turkey along with rattlers and tarantulas.  Combine that with cholla cactus that'll wrap around a tire enough to stop an ATV, pinon pine and yucca plant will give you an idea of what the place is like.

Ft. Collins....what a wonderful town, I make it up there several times a year just to visit and go to the Jax store.  I also love the Cache l' Poudre and caught many a Grayling out Zimmerman lake back in the day.  Back in the early 60's I did summer work with the forest service based out Ft. Collins.
