Hello - new member of the forum here, from the piedmont area of N.C. Very much into DIY (much to the dismay of the wife sometimes) and have been fascinated by crossbows for a long time. Since N.C. made legal the use of crossbows (and firearms suppressors!) for hunting, I now have the perfect excuse to build myself a crossbow. Very interesting and useful forum here!

Yep - LOTS of good reading. And when you've read enough, we're ready to answer questions. You're looking to build a hunting bow in particular? There are many possibilities, from the simple Skane type pinlock to ultra complex trigger mechanisms, depending on your wood- and metal-working skills. Is there a minimum draw weight for crossbow hunting in NC?

yep, in N.C. the prod has to be at least 150 lbs. draw. I was thinking perhaps building a basic medieval type of crossbow, steel prod, using the plans on Alcheminc. I just need to source out or make the prod. Judging by my past experiences of having to cut thick steel it seems to be easier to buy it.

Re: Greetings from North Carolina
You're right about the steel work. As you can see from some of the other current discussions here, don't even think of re-purposing the leaf springs off your old Willy's Jeep!
Something to look for are the 150# "replacement" prods you can find on Ebay and elsewhere for around $30. Another thing to think about, if you're not married to the idea of a steel prod, is the fiberglass chainlink fence Tension Bar prod. Take a look at the prod in my avatar photo. That's a 28" and 16" length of 1/4"x 3/4" fiberglass tension bar "loose laminate" Chinese style prod, that draws about 250#, and cost me less than $7!

Re: Greetings from North Carolina
very cool, cheap + powerful = perfect solution. I am going to check that out, maybe there is a tutorial? I like the idea of steel prods (strong, lasts a long time, neat looking) but the fiberglass seems so much more practical. I'm a "function over form" kind of fellow.

Re: Greetings from North Carolina
I just found your pinlock build post. That's going to work just fine, going to build my daughter a light weight crossbow using that method
