    First topic message reminder :

    Hi All,

just a quick introduction, I am a wood-carver and adult-ed wood-work instructor in wet and windy Wales - the UK not the Australian one......I am just generally interested in making and decorating stuff from wood.  I've carved a few air-rifle stocks recently and did once try making a crossbow when I was 11.....

Anyhow, I have always been fascinated by cross-bows and also in archery - I regularly fail to hit field archery targets but that is another story and am really looking forward to getting to know this site but there is just so much to learn ! Very Happy

    All the best

Welcome Mike, hope to see some pictures soon of your crossbow.
I have made several crossbows including medieval but funny thing is I have not actually hunted with the medieval yet.

Pa. have full inclusion of crossbows what is it in Montana?
BTW I passed through Missoula back in 1991 on my honeymoon. Love the country there, was hoping my bride would want to move there but it did not happen.

Todd, thanks for the reply. Still trying to figure things out here. Montana is super anti-crossbow for the fact that the Montana bow hunters association is made up of traditional archery guys that think crossbows give an unfair advantage. Knowing what I know I would have to disagree, seeing as how the modern compound bows that are legal are basically using the same trigger mechanism that crossbows use. Plus the effective range of my crossbow seems to only be 30 yards or so, compared to that of my compound that is really effective well beyond that. But to answer your question, crossbows are legal here during the general rifle season. Hoping to be the first known person to put a medieval style crossbow to the test in Montana..

    Hi Mike,
I'm a rifle hunter that also likes crossbows.  We get an early archery season where I am - B.C. Canada, (crossbows are included) so you get a jump on the rifle hunters by a couple of weeks.

I am far from an expert in archery hunting but will certainly share any successes I have here in the fall.

My strategy for rifle hunting is usually to hike through an area or just drive through the cut blocks.  With the crossbow it will be mostly about the ambush, blind hunting, tree stands, basically getting closer.

I’ve tried to tweak the bolt weight for best speed, while not losing too much kinetic energy.  I’ve stuck on a particularly nasty looking mechanical broad head (the FOC), it should do the job if I can get it on target!
