    First Build Empty First Build

Post by Wargasm Mon Jan 12, 2015 7:56 pm

Ok, as the title suggests I'm in the process of attempting my first medieval style crossbow build. For the first one I ordered the metal bits, stirrup, prod, tickler, nut etc. from slobows. I am going to attempt a captured roller nut, I'll be using oak board, laminated together as I couldn't find a think enough piece locally. This one is going to be for my son, we're both learning as we go, the intention is that he'll have this one with a 60-80lb prod and I'll build a larger stronger one for me after we've honed our skills. I've downloaded a template from Alchemy and printed and cut out  atrial blank from some pine, what I would like to know is if someone has a better guide, link to a how to video, or some more detailed instructions. I'm good with wood, and mechanics so I know how to do what needs to be done, but I need to know exactly what needs to be done. Any help is appreciated.

Starting with 2 halves is a great way to start.  You can also line up the channel for the tickler. My first bow was Alchem as well. It makes a good bow.

If you stick to the Alchem plan, you should have no trouble at all. If you immediately deviate from it like I did on my first build, you might end up in trouble!  smack
I'm not aware of any better diagrams available, is there something in particular you wanted to clarify?

just wondering about draw length in relation to nut placement. the plans are quite specific and wondering if they are made for a specific prod, draw length can't be universal

Ah, good point. I haven't used that particular prod yet, so I'm not sure, but if you email Gary at Slobows I bet he'll be happy to tell you if it is designed for a different power stroke than the higher power prods.

I just had a chance to check Alchem and Slobows web sites- is the prod you ordered the SB101? If so it has a 28.5" span and and 11.5" overall draw- 3.5" brace height and 8" power stroke. The plans Alchem provides are pretty much universal for any of the 28.5" prods available from their site or from Slobows, because they are the same thing, just different part numbers. Hope that helps.
