how deep should I recess the nut? Empty how deep should I recess the nut?

    Post by stuckinthemud1 Sun Aug 05, 2018 7:15 am

I know there is a thread on this here somewhere but I can't find it, so, I am cutting out the socket for the nut and find that the  30mm diameter nut is currently set at 20mm depth (2/3), I think I read it should be at 3/4 (22mm), so  should I recess the nut a little more or leave as it is?

I usually sink the nut by 2/3, so 20mm depth for a 30 mm roller is just about right.  If you go as much as 3/4, you may not be able to take the roller/nut out of the top of the socket.  So if you need to remove it, you'll have to go in/out from the side.  There's nothing wrong with that as long as you plan your bow that way, and if there's enough of the lugs exposed at the top to hold the string at lock.  Geezer.

ps: Payne Gallwey's pattern specified 3/5... in my experience that is too shallow, unless you use a very tight-fitting roller and reinforce the socket edges with something like bone, brass or steel.  Payne Gallwey's pattern WAS for a big flemish arbalest with fully reinforced iron socket and nut... so perhaps the 3/5 works allright under those circumstances.  I'll stick with 2/3.  Geezer.
