    hi,
    i'm making a medieval crossbow.
I'm not sure if I should make a reinforcement pin in the front?
the prod is 180 lbs.  not very powerful.
I would like to hear from you.

the top to bottom reinforcement pin/bolt is needed to prevent splitting or cracking along the grain lines in the tiller. the prod mounting cross hole in the tiller has already introduced a weekness in that region.. the pin would have been extra complex work during the period it was put there for a reason..

I fitted one, cos, well, why not? Completes the period look and holds the overlays on securely. Probably not totally needed but a simple job I spent weeks agonising over.  I used a 5 inch round nail with a wide, flat top, I countersunk the bolt table to match the nail head and drilled through a fraction oversize to allow room for the nail and wood to move for changing temp and moisture. I cut the nail 1mm or 2mm over length and peened the narrow end into place. Easy job, took a half hour, looks fantastic
