    OK, I want to build a crossbow stock with a definite Colonial America flavor....I want to use a roller nut....I do not want a fancy, complicated trigger assembly....but I DO want something that pulls and looks like a modern-ish trigger....

    Any ideas or designs?

    Do you mean a matchlock musket (1600-1700)? Or a Brown Bess flintlock (post-1722)? Both are "Colonial American" but about hundred years apart.

    Google "matchlock musket", find an image you like, copy and enlarge it to something like 18" or 19" between the trigger and the butt plate. There's your crossbow prod.

    Roller nuts are readily made from short lengths of 1-1/2" diameter Delrin rod available from the Internet for a few dollars. Looks like ivory or ebony depending on the color you choose.

    Search here on "trigger" and "lock" and you'll find several discussions with diagrams of simple to complicated actions that can be applied to a roller nut. Depending on the draw weight you choose you'll need one or more links to take the weight off of the trigger pull.

    Go to e-bay and look up The American Percussion Schuetzen Target Rifle and look at the cover of that book ! Talk about a neat lookin' stock ! Built as a crossbow would be WOW FACTOR !

    Oh, I know about the Colonial Era....my love is the KY Settlement Era from 1775-1786. In fact, I reenacted (to VERY strict standards) that era for years....

    I know what I want the crossbow to look like....just curious about trigger designs that will be more like a single trigger for the Era.....I think I have trigger that will work...

    That is exactly the picture I needed....I am building mine with a bit more primitive trigger and in the style of the "Jaeger" style...going to go with iron furniture for mine!

    Glad the pictures helped. Jaeger style is cool as well. The hardest part is to come up with a trigger that you pull with one finger, suggest you make one that uses several axles and "transition levers". Not really all that complicated just a few more pieces and I think you will find it well worth the effort.

    Easiest way ive found to make a easy pull trigger is leverage, the more leverage that can be achieved with the sear latch and trigger the better but also keeping in mind the postion of the axis's of these two parts.

    Well, I am looking at numbers 7 & 8 on the above web page. I am probably going to give #7 a try....I can design it so that it locks into place and still have a light trigger pull....

    Also, it is simple, yet effective....and in my eyes....simple is best!

    Whilee "B's" picture looks simple it has a problem. Due to ratio of leverage the trigger pull will be extremely heavy. I will try to draw something with transitional lever and post it later.

    Here is a drawing. Best to make a mock-up using luan or paneling to work out the geometry like I did in my build-along. If all works out use the cut outs as patterns.

    I agree the tickler is the simplest solution that works very well, the only issue is trying to adapt that to a shoulder stock layout. It can be done, maybe have to move the nut forward a bit.

    Just be careful to have enough leverage, and not to make the notch too deep (as it is on your drawing). I have a crossbow that works with this kind of trigger shape, pretty smooth. Of course it won't move like an actual modern trigger, because of the position of the pivot point, but does the job

    But if you split that single lever into two - trigger + transitional lever...it'll pull a bit more like home. Wink Add a spring held down with a screw/bolt and you'll just need to rotate the nut a bit to reset it.

    I like the route we took here actually, nice break from the hook sears. They've been buzzing in my head so much lately with all the bull-pup designs that I completely forgot of the good ol' reliable. Laughing

    This was my first *successful* trigger group that I ripped off of a production crossbow...back when there was no Arbalist Guild. (Musket butt crossbow and triggers 602584What?!?! There was a time when this place didn't exist?!?!? Shocked)

    (yeh, please just ignore the background noise in that video Embarassed)



    In this modern version, as you can see, there's a pretty nice little automatic safety too. Would be cool to see this system used on a more classic setup one day. If interested, I think I know a way to incorporate a similar one quite easily into this type of build.
