I am currently working on a book on Agincourt and I would like to include a photograph of a Western European crossbow, either an original weapon, or an authentic replica from around the time of the battle. Anything representative of a weapon used in the late fourteenth century/early fifteenth century would be great. If anyone can help that would be most appreciated, and any images used would of course be appropriately credited to the copyright holder.

Thanks, yes I can find images via Google but I still need to trace the owner of the copyright before I can use them and I am hoping that a member of the Guild might be able to give me permission to use their photos.

Drop a PM note to Geezer or Lightly here. They build some of the best historical replicas and would probably be glad to share a few photos for the attribution credit.

Geezer here: chiming in about 14th century crossbows. The best single source I have found for pictures of ancient crossbows is this one: http://www.ballestaperu.com/galerias/fotos/galerias-de-fotos/category/2/asSlideshow.html
This is crossbow lovers site in Peru: They've included about every medieval-renaissance crossbow they could find.
As for specific 14th or 13th century crossbows, anything older than @ 1450 is very scarce. Holger Richter's Hornbogen Armbrust book is about the best single published source for older horn-bow crossbows, but I think even he would be hard-pressed to provide a reliable illustration of an Agincourt (1415) crossbow.
Sorry I can't be more help, guys, I'd happily point you in the right direction, but I think the best-documented bow from anywhere near that period is the Dresden Bow that's supposed to date from @ 1425. It's a long, slender Germanic bow, similar to my no. 5F pattern. Geezer

Geezer - wouldn't photos of some of your Pattern #2 builds suffice for Peter to illustrate an Agincourt era crossbow?

Would my pattern 2C suffice? Probably, but I couldn't prove it by a period example. it's certainly a simple pattern, and Western and southern crossbows tend to be rather angular, whereas northern and eastern bows generally have a rounder cross-section. As far as that's concerned, a simplified version of the Maximilian 5S bow, with bound-in prod would probably be a fair approximation as well... since earlier bows tended to be rather thinner than the later models. But if we're trying to PROVE provenance of an early 15th century Agincourt bow, we're probably SOL. Still the Peruvian site is a dandy, isn't it? Geezer
